Why Leadership is Essential for International Students Abroad?

An international student deals with various cultures while studying abroad. It is significant for them to demonstrate impeccable behaviour while coping with their classmates and colleagues at the workplace.

Ideally, they should learn to influence the behaviour of others in their surroundings. International students are the representatives of their cultures in foreign countries, and that is why they should develop the ability to exhibit the fundamental characteristics of a leader.

The following features enable international students to prove themselves as leaders:

Inspire Others

Leaders tend to inspire others through their behaviour. Whether you study or work abroad, your behaviour should be influential in a way that others get convinced by your logic or way of working.

Use Gestures Quite Often

Be expressive to others, if someone is showing kindness to you, pay gratitude warmly to give them an impression that you value them. By doing so, you will be able to develop a positive relationship with individuals around you.

In response, others would also start appreciating you. Individuals belonging to different cultures would develop a good perception of your lifestyle and about you as a person.

Be Interactive

Seek different ways to interact with people and offer them help. Initiating conversation nicely and politely always leaves a good impact on others.

Team Building

Engage your colleagues at the workplace and develop a team. Work collectively with them to achieve the organizational goal. Take the initiative and develop the ability to guide your team members. Listen to their concerns and try to come up with an appropriate solution.

Set Long Term Plan

Devise a strategy for the future. For example, where you see yourself in five -year time? Achieve small milestones to reach your ultimate target.

Prioritize Personal Development

Evaluate yourself regularly, and always seek ways to improve yourself. If you think you have any shortcomings, try to overcome those. Do not hesitate if you think you need a piece of expert advice; consult with your peers and friends.

Search for New Ideas

New ideas will always reinforce your mission of success. To get new ideas, keep thinking positively, and continue reading the latest articles about technology and your respective field. Reading informative articles will broaden your views and may provide you with fresh ideas.

Become an Example for your Colleagues at the Workplace

Always work with a can-do attitude, be an initiator, whenever your seniors assign you some work, always step forward and demonstrate through your position that you are willing to do the job. In other words, leading by example will open the doors of promotion and success for you.

Integrity

To show leadership, you need to demonstrate a high level of honesty and integrity. Be fair in judgement, and keep all the facts in mind before reaching any conclusion.

Motivation Skills

As a leader, you should motivate others by understanding their needs and overall shortcomings. If any of your team members are under pressure or struggling to give their best, encourage them and propose an appropriate solution to their problem.

Self-Confidence and Strong Will Power

A leader is the one who never gives up even under adverse circumstances. Never let negativity to get on top of you. Always show determination and face the situation with full confidence and durable will power because you have to achieve your organizational targets, and guide others.

Intelligence

Intelligence is one of the significant characteristics of a leader. You should be intelligent, proactive and wise enough to evaluate the pros and cons of a particular situation and make the decision accordingly. Also, vision and foresightedness will prove to be instrumental in your overall journey of achieving targets.

Decisiveness

Through strong decision-making skills, you can manage your work effectively. Also, you need to stick to your decisions as it will reflect your character.

What are Leadership Styles in Practice?

Autocratic Leadership

In this type of leadership, a leader is a sole decision-maker. They do not involve others in the overall decision-making process; instead, they expect their followers or subordinates to follow the decisions.

Democratic Leadership

This is the type of leadership in which a leader involves everyone in the consultation process, and makes a decision by keeping in view everyone’s opinion.

Laissez-faire/ Free-rein leadership

This is the way of leadership when a leader gives complete independence to their subordinates for making decisions.

Which Style of leadership is more effective and result-oriented?

The democratic style of leadership will prove to be more effective because it is a systematic way of involving everyone in the decision-making process. When all the stakeholders have their inputs, the leader will be in a position to analyze every situation and its implications.

So, as a leader, involving all your team members in the consultation and final decision-making process will make you a leader in real sense. Additionally, everyone’s contribution will yield positive outcomes such as your team will show confidence in your leadership, and they will follow your directions willingly.

Democratic attitudes bring people closer to each other. Leaders who follow democratic norms are always sincere; they are the ones who reflect strong moral values and principles as the bases of their decisions.

Due to this style of leadership, you will tend to seek diverse views, and your optimism and clear-headedness will positively impact your team or group members.

Key Notes

Leadership holds fundamental importance for international students. While studying abroad, you need to demonstrate high moral values to your fellows and team members. Your behaviour should be inspiring, and you need to be interactive with your fellows.

Similarly, integrity, honesty, self-confidence and durable will power are the main attributes that will define your character as a leader. For a leader, the democratic style of leadership is suitable as it involves all the stakeholders in the consultation and decision-making process.

As a leader, when you include everyone, you are in a position to have diversified opinions. Your team members will recognize you as an inspirational figure who always leads by example.
