How Can Graduate Students Apply for Internships Abroad?

Being a graduate is a milestone of its kind. You are now ready to participate in the race of job seekers. What obstructs your way is the experience, which, in your case, is not enough to outweigh the candidates who already have secured significant positions.

Internships are an excellent opportunity to master practical skills before you earn your degree.

In fact, as a graduate, you own a pool of internship options in your field of interest. You have to walk through the right steps to grab the best one for you.

Find an Appropriate Internship for You

Brainstorm the best internships ideas that suit your interests. Look for something that fascinates you the most and motivates you for the future. Identify what the potential opportunities for you to work off-campus in the United States are.

You can talk to the international student advisers of your institution to know in detail about possible situations. Also, you can consult with professors and graduate advisers of your academic department to confirm which field of study are you allowed to work.

The graduate career professionals will also guide you in preparing for internships in your area.

Go With the Company That Fits Perfect for You

Once you know what are you going to learn, find out the companies which offer similar opportunities. You need to narrow down your list based on the following terms:

Duration

Decide on which timing suits you for an internship. The employers hire both full-time and part-time interns as per their requirements. For guidance, you can talk to your mentor or supervisor to help you with a suitable internship option.

Go through the departmental policies and the schedule of your academic program to select the perfect time.

Paid or Unpaid

Check if your employer compensates for the work you do. Research beforehand about whether the Company offers a paid or an unpaid internship. Talk with your international student adviser, which of the plans is better for you. You will require an employment authorization in either of two cases.

Does the Internship Align with Your Interest?

Feel free to remove a particular job from your list if it does not resonate with your goals and interests. Don’t think about it if it is not the thing that you want to learn.

Time to Apply for the Internship

When you have shortlisted a few internships for you, start using. Visit the website of the companies and find the application procedure. Follow the instructions and schedule your appointment for the interview. Don’t forget to check your eligibility for an Erasmus+ or Radboud scholarship.

Eligibility

If your dream company is in Europe, then you will be leveraging an Erasmus+ scholarship with permission to intern at any European institution of your choice. But, you won’t be allowed to intern at the European Union or associated organizations.

But if you are willing to intern outside Europe, then you are eligible for Radboud internship that supports students on financial terms.

The Interview

Get some experience for the internship position you’re seeking and learn some skills related to it. Do not forget to make your resume expressive and as creative as possible.

Use platforms like LinkedIn to connect with networks associated with the Company. They would help you to land at a significant opportunity and prepare thoroughly for the interview. Research about the questions that are more likely to be asked in the interview.

Get an Employment Authorization

After you have an internship offer, get a written offer letter from the employer, and ask for employment authorization to confirm your internship and work legally.

Make sure that you clear all the policies and terms beforehand with the Company. It will help you avoid last-minute confusion and misconceptions (if any). Get your internship contract explained to you thoroughly with the details of your work and supervisor.

Also, you should get information about working hours, perks, additional expenses, and your salary

Pack Your Bags with All That You Need

All set for your first internship. Get ready. If you are travelling to another country, keep your visa and other immigration documents complete with you. Try to find a place for your stay a little early before you join the internship.

It will avoid wasting time and ensure comfortable accommodation for a long time. Check for all insurances and vaccination requirements before landing in another country. Many countries have their terms and conditions regarding your health and protection.

Always try to look for opportunities that match your expertise. Never compromise with your future because of a wrong decision.
