Best Learning Styles for International Students

The decision to move abroad is itself a challenging event in someone’s life. However, if you made the decision and prepared your mind, you have completed the most challenging part.

Adapting to a new culture and environment in terms of society and academics can be merely stressful but completing your studies successfully is another challenge you have to deal with shortly.

The educational systems of various countries significantly differ. Some educational systems mainly rely on the teachers’ attempts to make students comprehensive in learning outcomes. Some educational systems encourage students to do self-learning and understand subjects on their own.

Teachers only answer to doubts the students go through when doing their research. This is how the global educational system varies. However, most of the universities in the UK, USA, Australia, and New Zealand conduct lectures around 50 minutes, and students should do their research by taking the lectures as a starting material.

There will be continuous assessments including assignments, practical sessions and field trips as appropriate for your courses being taken. However, some international students will find these new interventions of teaching and learning strange.

But, you can’t turn back now. You have to find your way of studying to achieve well in your degree program. This is not a “single-size” thing, and you have to trial and test to determine which learning methods fit you better than other approaches.

There are about 70 learning methods available for students. But you might have some special requirements as an international student who then needs a lot of testing to determine the best learning method.

Here, we introduce the most popular learning methods for you to choose from the list. Remember, do not limit only to one learning method. If that method does not seem to fit you, then test the next one. You will be able to find your learning method using this way.

1. Visual Learning

Visual learning can be used by students who prefer to learn using charts, graphs, and videos. The human brain processes visual information faster than the standard text. Also, researchers have said that students can memorize facts easily using visual presentations.

Most of the universities provide recorded lectures for students. Also, there are many sources on the web online such as educational websites and YouTube. Though YouTube cannot be considered as a proper way to learn, but as well know, we use YouTube videos to clarify things.

Watch as much as you can. And if you think your progress I considerably good after following this learning method, then that is the best method to go with you!

2. Audio Learning

Well, you might have seen some students recording the lectures in the classroom may be using a recorder or a smartpen capable of instant recording. They listen to the tapes when they study to remember specific essential points mentioned by the lecturer.

The incredible thing is that some students find it easier for them to learn and memorize subject matters by listening to the records relevant to their subject. If you are someone who thinks that audio learning will match for you to perform well in your academics, you can try continuing your studies by listening to recorded lectures or podcasts available on the web.

Podcasts are one of the popular and efficient methods to learn new things. They also can improve your communication skills as a bonus pint! Try it out.

3. Read and Write

Reading style reading/learning is better suited to people who love reading and writing, as you would assume. This is because their brains are easily impressed with the facts they read and write.

Those that have this as their primary learning style maintain concepts, passages and even whole chapters with very little work. Also, you have to think a bit before writing about how to organize the things you have read. This allows your brain to analyze the facts that have been read, causing it to go deeper into your memory.

Such memory also lasts longer. This method is the most frequently used method of learning. You might have seen that your friends read and quickly noting down things on a paper. If you are interested in trying, do not hesitate to do trial and test.

4. Kinesthetic Learning

At college, for example, they may be attracted to science subjects that require them to engage in examinations, or to items such as mechanical engineering, which again is a topic with many practical sessions.

5. Study Together

Most university students follow this method, especially when they have to face an examination shortly. It is the usual routine that we get so many questions and doubts when learning. Those doubts may not appear when the lecturer is explaining the course material, but when you study alone, it comes as a boom!

Friends become excellent support for you on these occasions. When a group gathers and studies, most of your doubts can be solved out because each member of your group is smart in different subject areas. What else can make a perfect study room?

We suggest experimenting with different learning styles instead of concentrating on one obsessively. It can often be the most efficient way to increase your ability to learn.

Although each of us teaches differently, our learning style must always be versatile. Of starters, if you love learning by book reading, you must not confine yourself towards this medium alone. If you do, you might skip some quality content from videos and live sessions, etc.

My suggestion is that while discovering your prevailing learning style is certainly helpful; do not let this take you hostage. With your studying, be safe and versatile. This will focus your mind at its best, and your hunger for information.
