Living Expenses for Students in Denmark

Accommodation Expenses

More than half of your monthly expenses go for accommodation. Accommodation charges range between 400 and 670 Euros in many Danish cities. You can spend up to 800 – 900 Euros monthly if you are in Copenhagen.

Denmark is a safe and busy transportation haven. About 30% of students go to school through public transportation means while about 50% of students take a bike to school.

On average, international students in Denmark spend between 40 Euros and 50 Euros per month. You will surely enjoy cycling within the vicinity of Copenhagen because it is bike heaven.

  • You will incur extra expenses, including the monthly cost of between 30 Euros and 65 Euros on books and study materials.

Charges for Danish Visa and remittance for residence

Students who are not citizens of EU/EEA and Switzerland must have a residence permit before studying in any Danish University. It will take about two months to process the residence permit, and it will cost 255 Euros. 

Meanwhile, students of EU/EEA and Switzerland will be allowed to live and study in any Danish university for three months without a work permit. After which they are required to apply for a registration certificate. The certificate is free, and the processing duration is three days. 

Scholarships and grants for Danish University students

Students can leverage numerous financial aids to take care of their academic and living expenses. 

  • The Danish government offers financial grants to students who wish to study Danish people’s ways of life, language, culture, arts, and other related courses. This scholarship is given under the Danish cultural Agreements. 
  • American students who are enrolled in masters and PhD studies in Denmark can enjoy the Fulbright program. 
  • The Danish state educational support is a scholarship scheme which is made available for Denmark citizens. However, international students studying in Denmark can apply, but they have to meet the scholarship requirements.
