How to Take Notes in College?

September 7, 2020 //  by Amit Kumar

Taking notes is an important part of your college studies. You can achieve good grades on the basis of the notes you take during the class. Ideally, you can use pen and paper, and in the modern era, different notes-taking apps are also available.

Make sure your class-notes are complete. Generally, teachers provide a lecture outline before and after the class, but it cannot be the replacement of making your own notes. You need to be efficient and quick for taking notes. In fact, you have to catch your teachers’ frequency.

Sometimes, the teacher quickly runs through a topic, and you do not have enough time to note important points. However, if you practice adequately, then you can effectively note down what your teachers discuss in the class.

If you pay attention to the lecture and take notes efficiently, you will get tremendous help from your notes for exam preparation.

Attend the Classes Regularly

If you skip classes, you will end up missing important lectures. Therefore, you may not be able to complete your notes. Although you may consult your classmates to make up for the missed lectures, it will not be a substitute for note-taking during your presence in the class.

Also, if you miss a class, the sequence of lecture disturbs, and this may affect your preparation for exams. However, it’s a reality that maintaining 100% attendance is difficult in some situations. For example, college athletes cannot attend classes all the time, and those who fall sick, they also take leave.

If you cannot attend any class for some genuine reason, make sure you ask someone to make good notes for you. Always be on-time. Good students are always punctual.

Do Not Hesitate to Ask Questions

During the lecture, you might not understand any point; if such a situation arises, do not hesitate to ask a question. Be absolutely clear what your teacher is saying. Your notes have to be perfect, and if any question arises, ask straightaway or note it down, and when the teacher finishes, ask the question.

Besides, pay attention to the question that your classmates ask because sometimes they also ask or discuss an important point with the teacher.

Sit in Front Rows and Middle

Being close to the teacher always gives you an advantage. There are fewer distractions in front rows. You can fully concentrate on the lecture. By sitting in the front row and in the middle, you are in the right position to see the board.

Also, when the teacher would realize that you are focusing on the lecture, they will give you importance by asking you if you have any questions. In this way, you would develop a connection with teachers.

How to Make Notes in College?

Handwritten notes always help you. Students can recall easily what they have written. Preferring pen and paper may prove to be better than using apps to note down things.

If you think teachers speak fast, you can use abbreviations. You do not necessarily have to write complete words. Makes notes by hand, always helpful. The main purpose is to record what you study. So, if you can understand abbreviations, save your time, and keep up with the teacher’s pace.

Understand the Topic

Taking notes is important, but understanding the content is also important. Make sure you understand what you write on the paper. Do not spend all your energy on writing, instead learn what teacher is saying, and keep writing down the things as you get along.

Remember, you have to lay a solid foundation of learning in your college. College studies are not about memorizing or writing down things. These studies help you develop critical thinking. Your teachers expect you to understand the concept. Do not let confusion grow.

Some students think if they keep writing the important points, things will be clear to them at some point in time. This is not the right approach. Dispel any confusion right away, and clear your concepts.

If in the flow of the lecture, you do not get a chance to ask questions, you can approach your teacher after the lecture. Good teachers always encourage students to ask questions.

Do Not Give Up Taking Notes

For some students, taking notes all the time can be a little frustrating. But, keep in mind it is the matter of your preparation because notes are a helpful tool in exam preparation. Stay on the topic, and pay close attention to the teacher. By doing so, you can efficiently take notes.

After going home, when you open the books and notes, you would realize that it’s easy for you to recall the topic or lecture. It’s always important to review notes after going home. When you review notes, you actually reinforce your concepts, which is a right step toward comprehensive test preparation.

Consider that note-taking and reviewing those notes are your prime responsibilities while studying in the college.

Use Headings

When you take notes during the college lecture, use headings for clarification. By giving proper headings, the topics and the content would not mix up, and you can make preparation topic wise. Everything would look neat and tidy, and there will make no hassle for you when you consult your notes.

Self-Test Through Notes

When you write notes, test your knowledge without looking at notes that whether you remember what you studied in your class during lecture. It will be a good practice, and it will be like self-testing. Only look at the topic in headings, and then explain to yourself the fundamental concept of those topics.

Use Separate Notebook for Different Courses

Organization of notes is important. Using a separate notebook for each subject means you can easily pick notes of any subject. If you use a single notebook, you will have to spend time in searching for the relevant notes.

Taking notes is an important aspect of college studies. Perfect notes always help students, and they are able to prepare well for the exams. Do not miss classes, be punctual, and always focus on what teachers say in the class. Review the notes on a daily basis so that you keep in mind all the topics. Sit in the front rows and preferably in the middle to avoid distraction and pay more attention to the teacher.
