Students are often curious about online job interviews. They need to take the right steps to ensure they perform well in the job interview via Skype. Online interviews are less stressful as compared to face-to-face interviews. If you remain confident during the interview, the chances of success are higher.

1. Give an Overview of Yourself/Introduce Yourself

This is the fundamental question for your online interview. To make an impression, you need to be concise. Briefly give details about your academic background and professional experience if any. Avoid providing personal information else it would be unnecessary and may count negatively.

You have to answer this question intelligently. Before appearing for the online interview, try to gather maximum knowledge about the company. If the job is technical, specifically highlight your skills and any relevant projects that you have accomplished.

Explain to them that you can utilize your abilities in this job. Rehearse the answer to this question. 

3. What Makes You Think You Are Suitable for This Job?

Describe your skills that are relevant to the nature of the job. Shed light on your competencies and the past achievement in the same field. Discuss your strengths. For example, you can say that you are a target-oriented person who likes to go the extra mile for achieving the target.

Express yourself as a quick learner. You can give them a real example from your professional career in that regard.

4. What Is Your Most Significant Achievement so Far?

To answer this question, focus on your work-related achievements. As a student, you may have a little or no work experience. You may discuss a personal goal that you are achieved. 

5. What Is Your Primary Motivation?

Motivation leads to success in every field. You have to answer this question with full determination. The motivational factor varies from person to person, so there is no right or wrong answer to this question.

For instance, you can say that your passion to be at the top is your primary motivation. You can add that learning new things motivates you. If you are taking an interview for a customer service position, you may say that meeting customers’ needs motivates you.

6.  Why You Left Your Last Job or Why Do You Want to Quit Your Current Job?

When you answer this question, make sure you do not say any negative thing about your current or previous job. Provide them with concrete reasons. You can say that you were struggling to manage your studies with your last or existing post.

You had to sit late in the evening as per company’s requirements. Do not mention negative things about your previous company. Avoid saying any bad something about your supervisor or manager. 

7. Have You Applied to Other Companies Also?

The purpose of this question is to determine your level of interest in the job opportunity. In a way, interviewers want to know if you would stick to this job. It would help if you assured them that you do not believe in frequently changing the positions.

Even if you have applied for the jobs in other companies, do not specify the companies. Furthermore, you can say that you would stick to this position if hired. 

8. Do You Have Any Question?

Generally, this question is the concluding part of the interview. Do not ask anything that interviewer or interviewing panel has already discussed. If you do not have any question, you can thank them by acknowledging that they have previously discussed everything regarding job comprehensively. 

Tips for Online Job Interview

  • Keep eye contact with the interviewers by looking into the camera and not monitor
  • If you have not heard any point correctly, you can politely ask them to repeat. If you do not ask for clarification, you may give the wrong answer. 
  • The sound system may not be perfect. So, it would help if you communicated in a way that is audible to them. Additionally, you may ask them if they can hear you properly. 
  • The hiring managers notice facial expression, gesture and postures. Therefore, you should look calm and composed. Any signs of nervousness or anxiety may result in a negative impression.

Before the interviewer completes the problem, the answer may come to your mind. However, do not speak until the interviewer finishes. Interrupting them in the middle may offend them, and it is against professionalism. 

If you are giving an interview from your home, ask your family members not to speak loudly around your PC/laptops during your session.  When interviewer talks, give them an impression that you are attentively listening to them. 

Avoid long pauses and do not do ums and aahs, as these are noticeable elements during an online interview. Do not make any joke during the interview. Also, do not laugh loudly. However, an occasional pleasant smile will create a good impression. 

You have to convince them in a way that giving you the opportunity will be the right move for them.
