Unfortunately, there was not much assistance I had to deal with the same. However, if you are in the same boat, read on to know why micro-stress is not a good thing for international students.

Causes of Micro-stress

Stepping into a new world is a different ball game. There are continual demands to meet and adapt to each one of them is slightly traumatic. Plus, the failure to accomplish any one of them can also lead to students feeling pressured. The following are some causes that can lead to micro -stress in students.

  • Adjustments to the new environment
  • Academic expectations and demands of studies
  • Trying to maintain interpersonal relationships
  • Adjusting with new housing arrangements
  • No support system to back upon
  • Inability to cope up
  • Increase in commuting and requirements to reach on time
  • Rise in levels of independence causing more responsibilities

These micro-stress factors can be dangerous enough and cause a natural breakdown if not taken care of immediately.

Physical Ailments

It is not easy to cope up when you have something nagging you all the time. This not only damages the desire within you to excel but can cause physical problems as well. An average student who has just stepped into new surroundings finds dealing with so many points disturbing.

As a consequence, there is a negligence of basic health. This may manifest itself in the form of problems like:

  • Increase in a tendency to fidget around
  • Speech problems like mumbling
  • Upset stomach and related ailments
  • A rise in blood pressure
  • Pain in the chest

Problems in Concentration

When you have so much to take care of, your mind is always pacing at fast speed. That means, however hard you try, you would find it very hard to pay attention to one particular topic or subject. This is also damaging during examinations and assessments when the full attention of the student is required.

The student has to resort to multiple ways to manage things. Sometimes these attempts of his are successful, and often they are not. The failure to keep your mind focussed leads to a dip in the performance levels as well.

Managing Responsibilities

When you have to handle a lot of things at once, the ability to manage things dips. At such a point, students may become disorganized, further causing work at their end to keep piling up. Once that happens, keeping track of how to manage all the responsibilities suffers.

Eventually, work is completed as and when it becomes a priority, and some of the tasks are ignored. Sometimes this leads to students not being able to take care of their assignment deadlines, which can hamper their impression amongst professors as well.

Dipping Memory

There are a lot of things going on in the mind of an average student. Plus, there is a desire to excel and perform as the parents and family at home have huge expectations. Dealing with so many things affects the memory as you continue to balance things out when concentration is low, the memory suffers too.

Remembering things can be tough as you have so much going on in your mind already. Moving on, the increased incidents of forgetting things may cause problems during examinations. It could also cause a fall in the level of participation during classes.

Constantly Worrying

When you see things are not working as per your plan, you tend to worry about it. Unfortunately, this constant worrying is not going to solve the problem at hand. Instead, it would just take your mind of specific rather essential tasks at hand.

This means the student may find it challenging to manage his sleep patterns. The erratic sleep schedules cause the quality of their work to be affected, leading to assignments that are not up to the mark.

De Motivating Thoughts

Naturally, when you are tied up in a lot of tasks and are unable to manage them well, self-defeating thoughts tend to creep in. This, coupled with the fact that you do not have a shoulder to lean on, makes you highly demotivated.

There is a constant fear that you would fail at everything that you do. In the long run, these thoughts can have an impact on your thoughts and feelings as well. The next, you know that the overall performance keeps dipping down, leading to more tension.

Social Withdrawal

For students who have come from other countries, the only thing that makes them survive is the network of friends they have made. But, if the student is already stressed with so much work, he tends to withdraw himself from others, thus adding to the misery.

Students are preoccupied, which means that their relationships go downhill. The absence of any motivating person in life can be fruitful in bringing back things on track.

Temper Issues

Irritation and temper issues rise as students find it tough to tackle all the tasks that have been assigned to them. Either they know a way to vent all their anger or keep suffering from all that angst bottled up inside. When eventually things go completely out of control, temper tantrums lead to fallouts with friends and family.

Conclusion

A student trying to establish his base in a new community has lots to deal with. His expectations are high, too, and when things become hard to manage, it can cause micro stress. Fortunately, most universities have counsellors to guide students during such trying times.

Students are welcome to share their woes, and the counsellor can suggest simple solutions. Once the habit of taking things as they come settles in, often, students can handle any stress with ease.
