Post-Study Graduate Route Work Visa to Open in July

The UK Home Office announced on Thursday that a new post-study work visa will officially open for applicants on July 1 which will enable foreign students from any country to remain on for work experience after completing their course in the UK.

The Graduate route visa, revealed by UK Home Secretary Priti Patel last year as part of her current post-Brexit points-based immigration regime and reiterated in the Immigration Rules tabled in Parliament this week, will be available to foreign students beginning in the 2020-2021 academic cohort.

“As we recover from the global pandemic, we want the world’s greatest talent to see the United Kingdom as the natural place to pursue their ambitions in industry, research, the arts, and technology,” said Kevin Foster, Minister for Future Borders and Immigration.

“The reforms introduced today would ensure that they can quickly obtain the status they need to continue living, working, and pursuing their aspirations in the UK after they have secured a gold standard certification from one of our world leading education institutions,” he said.

Students who were coerced into remote learning last year due to coronavirus travel constraints will have until June 21 to be physically present in the UK to be considered for the new pathway, which has been extended from the April 6 deadline.

Students who began their studies in January or February 2021 will need to be in the UK by September 27.

“The United Kingdom is committed to assisting thousands of Indian students in their pursuit of a world-class education and post-study job prospects in the United Kingdom. Given the pandemic travel constraints, these new arrival times will help ensure that foreign students will take advantage of the Graduate Route and obtain valuable international job experience “Barbara Wickham, Director of Inquiry” said Barbara Wickham, Director India, British Council.

To apply under the new Graduate route, international students must have completed an eligible course at a recognised UK higher education provider at undergraduate or higher level.

Students on the programme will be free to work or search for work for a duration of two years after completing their study, or three years for Doctoral PhD students.
