How to Write a Recommendation Letter for Student?

Recommendation letters are of high importance, especially for college admissions. As a student, if you enclose a recommendation letter with your application, it would leave a good impression about you.

Why Are Recommendation Letters Important?

Most of the admission officers at the college emphasize a comprehensive process. They want to have an insight into the student as an individual instead of solely focusing on their grades. They do not meet with the student in person, and that is why recommendation letters alongside students’ essay play an instrumental role in highlighting their intellectual as well as personal abilities.

For this purpose, the recommendation letters from professors, especially those who have complete information about their students, add a substance to the students’ applications. In other words, a recommendation letter serves as a vote in favour of students.

Also, the letter sheds light on students’ personal and academic traits. As a result, recommendation letters positively impact the chances of admission for students.

Following are the samples of effective recommendation letters; one is from an English professor, and the second one is by a history teacher.

Sample Recommendation Letter #1: Lucy the Poet

Dear Admission Officers

It was my pleasure to teach Lucy in her 11th grade honours English class at St. Helens High School. Right from the beginning, Lucy made an impact in the class with her ability to be eloquent about various texts and ideas. Besides, her interest in literature and passion for learning are praiseworthy. Indeed, Lucy is a talented student and poet.

Lucy has demonstrated her strong intellectual abilities in literature. She delivered an outstanding year-long thesis regarding identity development. In her work, she profoundly compared and contrasted the backgrounds from three different eras and came up with the critical analysis both from cultural and historical perspectives.

When it came to the thesis defence, Lucy brilliantly presented the crux of her research and forcefully replied to the questions. Lucy’s commitment to her literary pursuits and her interest in poetry are commendable. She received appreciation when her poetry got published in the institute’s literary magazine.

Also, she published her work in online magazines. She is a responsible, polite and a self-aware person. She believes in the research work. She positively participates in class discussions, and never hesitates to ask questions in case of any confusion.

She always cooperates with her classmates. Importantly, she always respects and welcomes the opposing views from her peers. She became friends with all of her classmates due to her kind nature.

Sample Letter # 2: Adams the History Analyst and a Social Organizer

 Dear Admission Committee

This letter is an acknowledgement to the significant contributions that Adams has made to our school and the overall community. I had the pleasure to teach him history both in 10th and 11th grade. As an individual, Adams believes in social justice and with the help of class lectures, he developed an insight into historical trends and events.

Without any doubt, I can say that Adams is one of the most committed and hardworking students I have ever taught in my teaching career. To motivate my students, I give the example of Adams to my students. He brilliantly worked on the research paper about the situation of Japanese-Americans in the United States during World War II.

Adams possesses analytical skills, and he can understand the context of current and historical events. As an individual, he believes in inequality and social justice. He always shows great respect for his teacher. He is punctual, and he pays attention to the lecture.

Adams has successfully developed a positive relationship with his classmates; they all trust him. Adams is a stand-out student of my class, and I fully recommend him. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at abc@abc.com
