What Does High School Mean in India?

You are here: Home / Blog / What Does High School Mean in India?

November 15, 2019 //  by Amit Kumar

The Indian education system is divided into different parts, just like other developed nations do. A child starts from the pre-primary level of education, which is just prepping them up for the next level of education. Then comes the Primary education.

Things change for children from here. After the initial stage of primary education, schools start testing children’s knowledge and memory power. Primary education is mainly for children/students from the age of 6 to 14. Next level is secondary education.

High School Or Secondary/Higher Secondary Education

Secondary education includes a high school for children in India. Different schools have different terms to refer to different classes of students. For some schools, high school may only mean courses of 11th and 12th.

While at the same time, for another school, high school may mean classes from 6th to 12th. That is why there is no defining high school with specifications in India.

The Education System

India has produced brilliant students year after year. There are different boards of education through which one can graduate from high school. Some of the boards are Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which as the name suggests, is affiliated with the Union government of India.

Other boards dominate the Indian education system as well such as ICSE, UGC and many other state boards. Every state has its board for education.

The Graduation System

Under the high school system in India, graduation is a simple process. A student has to appear in the CBSE board exams for two times, once in 10th standard and once in 12th standard.

Once you reach the 11th standard, you have to choose a specialization between various fields such as science, maths, commerce, and arts. The one you want will determine the subjects you will be studying over the next two years.

High School in Government Schools and Private Schools

Government schools are not the first choice of schools for anyone. Only students who can’t afford to study in a private school chooses to study in a government school. This is because the quality of education, infrastructure and hygiene are very low.

Children coming from government high schools in India aren’t generally prioritized by various college institutions. At the same time, students in high school of private schools in India get excellent facilities, and better opportunities to go into the right college for their future.

High School Or Secondary Education in India Goals

The goal of the primary school is to teach the student to learn to survive merely. But the goals of secondary education or high school is to teach the student to become complete members of society.

The specialization in the subject they choose is taught to them with the more practical use of the knowledge so that they learn to function in the adult world comprehensively. Some of the schools have a rigorous curriculum for students in high school so that they don’t feel scared and can compete diligently out in the real world.
