Berlin Universities Extend Study Duration Due to COVID-19

The House of Representatives has reported that, following the example of many federal states in Germany, Berlin has become the next federal state to expand the normal period of study due to COVID-19 innovations, by modifying its university rule.

The red-red-green government amended the Berlin University Act to alleviate the difficulties that students are facing caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. For all universities in Berlin, the rules would apply.

Students will no longer have to cover for delays in their research classes, according to the spokeswoman for science policy for the SPD parliamentary party, Ina Czyborra, since they will have an additional semester.

Many federal states in Germany have legally prolonged the normal duration of the study and student loans because of the limitations placed to avoid the spread of COVID-19. Those states include:

• Baden-Württemberg
• Bavaria
• Hamburg
• Hesse
• North Rhine-Westphalia
• Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
• Rhineland-Palatinate and Schleswig- Holstein

In the meantime, other states, including Bremen, Lower Saxony, Saxony and Thuringia, have opted to concentrate on individual feedback rather than the overall expansion.

Also, “the free attempt” will be possible in Berlin during the summer and winter semester 2020/2021, meaning that if the student does not pass the test, then the test attempt will not count. The reason for the review attempt is to mitigate the potential injustices that happened during the previous semesters.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Berlin is estimated to have infected about 22,000 students.

As of June, the Federal Government of Germany has secured EUR 100 million in emergency assistance from COVID-19 for students affected by the Corona pandemic. Through the help, students with emergency needs are required to receive up to EUR 500 per month from the time of adoption of the package of emergency aid. At the same time, applications for September can be submitted by the end of the month. There have been 135,000 applications accepted, and so far 80,000 others have been denied.
