5 Ways to Manage Disorganized Students

Not all the students are organized; some are irresponsible and do not manage their time properly. However, it doesn’t mean that disorganized and irresponsible students cannot improve.

Students who struggle to organize themselves can be managed easily. Teachers and parents of disorganized students should give them proper guideline regarding their homework and extracurricular activities.

Students must follow a proper routine and timetable for their studies, games, watching TV and other stuff. For students to be successful in their lives, they need to be organized.

Disorganized students usually do not complete their homework on time, they have messy desks, and they struggle to keep track of their belonging, and cannot manage their time. As a result, they end up getting poor grades. Teachers can guide these students by providing them with a structured routine with strategies.

Through the following tips, disorganized students can be managed.

1. Set Up a Time Table

Teachers should instruct disorganized students to follow a proper time table. In this regard, a classroom schedule should be established. The purpose of this schedule is to make things clear for students and give them a direction for doing their tasks. Disorganized students should be handled with extra care.

Teachers should give them special attention. They should tell them to complete tasks in a given time frame. Give them quizzes and ask them to solve that in limited time. The idea is to enhance their skills that are not being properly utilized. Individual sessions must be held with disorganized students to find as to where the students are feeling difficulties.

If students start getting better, teachers should appreciate them to give them more confidence. This would help students to further improve themselves. When students will be given an impression that they are important and can improve, they would put themselves on the path of self-organization.

2. Use Checklists

Using a checklist is important for disorganized students as it reminds them of tasks are required to complete during the day. Teachers and parents both should keep that checklist so that students can understand their responsibilities in an effective way.

For example, a teacher can give students five tasks to complete during the day, and if they are unable to complete those tasks they should give an explanation to students.

Similarly, parents need to instruct their children to complete specific tasks during the day such as playing football for half an hour, doing homework, eating fruit, etc.

3. Monitor Assignments

Parent’s involvement should be encouraged. Both parents and teachers should be in collaboration regarding the homework of students. Parents should check if their child is doing the homework properly. In case, the student is feeling any difficulty, parents should discuss the problem with the child.

Both parents and teachers should not put extra pressure on the student. All the problems should be resolved in a friendly manner. Parent-teacher meeting should be conducted on a regular basis to evaluate the overall performance of students; they both should share ideas with each other about the organization of students.

4. Keep Surroundings Tidy

Students’ desks in the classroom, their room in their home and overall surroundings must be kept tidy. Keeping surrounding tidy is a sign of organized students. In the class, teachers should especially ask students to clean their desk in case, it’s messy.

Teachers should guide students about cleanliness. Apart from keeping the surroundings tidy, parents should ensure that the overall appearance of their child looks tidy. Students should have a proper haircut; their dress and uniform should be clean, and nails should be regularly cut.

If students manage to keep themselves and their surroundings tidy, it will help them to organize other things in their lives.

5. Memory Aids

Memory aids facilitate students to remember various tasks. Teachers should ask students to use sticky notes, index card, and timers so that they can be reminded to complete their assignments well on time. These tools often prove to be effective for students and they manage to do their things efficiently.

With a little guidance and motivation, disorganized children can learn to organize themselves. At every stage, both teachers and parents should be cooperative because it is the matter of students’ future.

More Tips to Keep Students Organized

  • Teachers should engage in responsible students in the class to help disorganized students. Sometimes, students pay attention to their classmates and friends. Therefore, it will be a good idea to use a buddy system for disorganized students.
  • Ask students to keep important material in their folders so that they could take it home.
  • Whenever an important topic is discussed in the class, teachers should especially ask weak or disorganized students if they understand what is being discussed.
  • Encourage disorganized students to participate in the class, if they hesitate to discuss their point, teachers should give them confidence.
  • If a student is trying to improve, teachers should appreciate their efforts and encourage them to keep up the good work.
  • Students checklist should be checked on a daily basis to monitor their performance.

Moreover, it is important for parents to advise their children to clean all the mess they create right from the beginning (the time when children are very young). Parents should set an example for their children so that they can learn these habits from an early age.

The organization can be defined in terms of discipline. Children who learn discipline in their childhood, they remain organized in their later lives as well.

Parents need to set a time table of sleeping, waking up, watching TV, eating, and playing for the children in preschool age because this is a very important stage in children life as they try to learn from the environment.

Therefore, a disciplined and organized environment would help them grow mentally. Self-organization is the key to success, and children who are organized they do well in studies as well as sports as they follow a proper time table for all the activities. With a little effort, parent and teacher can manage to organize disorganized students.
