Why Study Botany

Plants always have been a very important part of our lives since the very beginning of human existence on earth. Even still many students are interested or fascinated with the existence of plants in our lives.

Plants are a very vital part of nature and we all know that nature is not only beautiful but useful too and so are plants.

About Botany

The study of plants is known as botany and the one who studies plants is called a botanist. It is also called plant science, plant biology, or plant phytology. It is that part of science that deals with the study and investigation of plants and their origins.

The name “Botany”, gotten from the exceptionally old Greek word ‘Botane’ which represents plants, pasture, or grass.

In the initial times, the study of botany was only restricted to herbalism but now it is a very vast subject that deals with a variety of plants and how they function like medicinal plants, poisonous plants, etc.

The study of plants, i.e. botany itself has a very rich and old history. Now, botany has become a very vast subject dealing with different specializations in plant sciences.

These days, there are hells lot of techniques have introduced like life cell imaging, plant science, optical microscopy, and electron microscopy are utilized to study or examine plants.

For what reason is Botany a significant part of science?

As I already said above that the plants are an important part of nature and science is also derived from nature which means that science and plants are also interrelated.

Every living organism out there is living because of plants. Humans and animals are for the most part dependent upon plants for their nourishment and oxygen. Do you think that without plants they can survive? The answer is no.

More or less, plants assume a significant part in forming the eventual fate of human culture. From food to oxygen, meds, and other gainful items, plants are named crucial living creatures.

Plants are fundamental to all life on earth. We all are very much aware of the word “photosynthesis”. With the help of photosynthesis, the plants make oxygen for us and help us to breathe and live.

What does botanist do?

Botanists are the specialists who study different parts of plants. They study the functions of the plants, their processes, applications, their relationships with the environment and nature, their different uses, and how they can be preserved or protected.

Botanists study the connections that the plants have with their surroundings, one another, and the natural life networks in which they reside.

The significant work of botanists is basic to ecological preservation. Their investigation of plants decides how various plants may respond to environmental change, and how to shield the endangered species from intrusive ones.

Also, the farming botanists work at the bleeding edges of the food crisis and help increment supplies of meds, filaments, and wood also.

Botany is an energizing field on the front line of the perfect nature study. It’s additionally a calling for nature darlings.

A few botanists concentrate on how plants identify with their characteristic networks. These plant environmentalists help in preserving the overall nature or natural environment.

Careers in Botany

We have already discussed that how fascinating this career or field of study is, and now I’m sure you must be thinking of what careers I can achieve if I decide to study botany. Don’t worry, we are here for that.

Plant science is a part of science that covers a wide assortment of subjects concerned with plants and the study of plants like Biology, Heredity, Plant Anatomy, Morphology and Evolution, Ecology, Plant Geography, Genetics, and numerous others.

A four-year college education, in any event, is essential for most professions in the field of plant science. A person who needs to turn into a botanist can get a four-year certification in fields mentioned above, or some others like herbal science, plant science, or botany, general science, etc.

Botanists can work in an assortment of areas relying upon explicit interests. A few botanists work in scholarly or government labs. Some work in galleries, workplaces, parks, and greenhouses. Still, others work for drug organizations or biotechnology firms.

Numerous botanists proceed to get graduate degrees as well as PhDs, which opens up different freedoms for greater valued and administrative jobs.

Therefore, studying botany offers you a wide range of career options in various fields of science. Some of them are:

  • Plant Scientists
  • Plant Biologists
  • Experts in the field of farming and agriculture
  • Conservationists in overseeing parks, forest, and characteristic wild regions
  • Environmental consultant
  • Florist
  • Ethnobotanist
  • Geneticist
  • Horticulturist

Branches of botany studies

Studies of plant science can be separated into three different categories which are biology, types of plants, and applied plant science.

Now in the case of biology, the following are the specializations of botany:

  • Plant anatomy- the study of structure and functions of the plants
  • Plant heredity- a study of genetic inheritance in plants
  • Cytology, the study of plant cells
  • Environmental ecology
  • Biochemistry
  • Biophysics
  • Plant taxonomy
  • Physiology
  • Microbiology
  • Sub-atomic Biology
  • Palaeobotany (the investigation of plant fossils)

Now, in the case of types of plants, the following are the specialization of botany:

  • Bryology
  • Lichenology—the investigation of lichens, living beings made out of the two fungi and algae. Although they are not plants, however, their investigation has customarily been incorporated inside plant science.
  • Mycology- the study of fungi
  • Psychology – the study of algae
  • Pteridology- the study of ferns

Now comes the third category which is applied plant science, this   category is related to the study of agriculture and the specializations are as follows:

  • Agronomy- the study of crop and soil science
  • Food science – the study of food crops
  • Forestry- the study of forests
  • Horticulture-the study of plants and crops
  • Natural resource management
  • Plant rearing
  • Plant pathology- the study of plant sicknesses

Plant Science Major

The study of botany will at some point requires you to select biology as your major. As said above that the botany is a very vast subject and it has a lot of o branches of study but every single branch requires you to study biology.

Having strong comprehension of biology is significant for being a botanist. Regardless of whether an individual goes for a college degree explicitly in plant science, they should take other science courses in various regions, beginning with general biology courses and moving to more explicit ones like microbiology.

Furthermore, it is frequently important to take other courses in different sciences as well like chemistry and physical science; these courses are typically expected of general science majors also.

Courses outside of science may likewise be helpful relying upon one’s inclinations; for instance, those inspired by preservation may likewise take courses in subjects like social sciences and public issues.

Science is a practical subject so without practical any study of science is of no use so it is likewise imperative to acquire involved experience working with plants through chipping in, summer occupations, nearby positions, and internships since the very beginning of entering this field of study to keeping on benefitting yourself with more and more knowledge.
