What Is Early Childhood Education?

Early childhood education aims to positively impact children’s development before their admission to elementary school. It includes experiences or activities that help children learn about their surroundings. The purpose of early childhood education is to educate and train children during preschool time. This education enables children to demonstrate better performance in school years.

In the United States, the education system focuses on early childhood programs to train children for the future. Most of the children are now able to access this form of education. Various types of educational programs serve children’s needs for early childhood education.  Pre-kindergarten (pre-K) and preschool are notable examples.

Also, the Head Start program was one of the pioneer programs for initial childhood studies. It was a federally-sponsored initiative, which specifically focuses on the children belonging to low-income households. The program also catered children with some kind of vulnerability.

Some childhood education programs are under the umbrella of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. For-profit organizations also run several early childhood education programs.

Advantages of Early Childhood Education

Early childhood education programs can adequately train children. The programs create learning abilities and identify the areas of development through different activities. The objective of these programs is to cover the educational needs of children from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

A few programs work to evaluate the IQ scores of children. They particularly want children to gain intellectual depth. As a result, some children persistently show high IQ scores. Benchmarks are set based on different criteria. Teachers measure the scores through natural observations, gathering data, and child’s involvement in learning and gaming activities.

Right from childhood, children realize the importance of learning new concepts. Children who participate in early childhood programs, tend to remain attached to their studies and learning process in the long run. Therefore, chances for them to engage in criminal activities are fewer.

In schools, the difference between children from an early childhood education background and others is quite obvious. Children who receive pre-school education are more likely to engage in learning activities in school compared to those who did not receive early education.

Although pre-school education provides children with several benefits, all the programs are not equally beneficial. Effective programs show their effectiveness when children move to the advanced stages. Parents need to check the program content thoroughly before sending their children to pre-school groups.

Highly trained and qualified staff is necessary for children’s growth. Useful programs also engage parents and provide children with a favorable environment so that they can utilize their skills.

More Benefits of Early Childhood Education

  • Children perform their learning and playing activities in a safe, friendly, and properly monitored environment.
  • Teachers provide children with personalized training. The system does not follow a strict schedule or timetable, instead, children enjoy and learn side by side.
  • Children get meals such as sandwiches and crisps from pre-school.
  • The program aims to build a strong foundation for children in the language learning process.
  • Students learn basic Math, which helps them in later stages.

  • Preschools are for a 2-year duration. They engage children for full-day learning and playing activities. Regular preschools demonstrate better results as compared to the non-regular ones.

What Do Children Learn in Pre-School Programs?

High-standard early education programs offer adequate learning facilities to children. Following are the learning targets of these programs.

  • Alphabetical letters.
  • Various sounds in words.
  • Words and how to use them.
  • Written language through books and engaging stories with visual images.
  • Fundamentals of science and math.

Undoubtedly, early education programs are beneficial for children. Keeping in view the advantages of these programs, some people want the government to fund them. Government funding will ensure extensive coverage, and children from various backgrounds will benefit from these programs.

Why Some People Support Early Education Programs

  • The academic and Professional world is getting competitive with every passing day. People want their children to sharpen their skills froman early age.
  • Many parents fear school or college dropouts by looking at the statistics. For this reason, they want their children to adopt the learning path right from childhood.
  • A pre-school environment fosters learning interest in children.
  • Parents want to prepare their children for highly-competitive job markets. Preparation starts at an early age.
  • Children from low-income or impoverished backgrounds may no longer live in poverty by accessing pre-school education. Government funding in this regard can play a vital role in such children.

Why Do Some Groups Oppose Early Childhood Education?

Although several individuals and groups are in favor of pre-school education, some groups also oppose this type of education. Following are the bases of their opposition.

  • Research indicates that positive outcomes out of the expensive pre-school curriculum are not for long-term.
  • Public schools already need improvement and basic changes. So, the inclusion of three to four-year-old children in educational programs won’t serve the purpose.
  • A few studies indicate that pre-school education overburdens students. They do not find enough time to play on their own.
  • Broad coverage of pre-school programs with the government’s involvement means that Government will levy more taxes. The public will bear the financial burden of early childhood programs.

Despite the opposing voices, early childhood education shows its benefits through children’s behaviors and learning skills. Children start learning important things before attending school. Early childhood education will continue to play a significant role in the U.S. education system.

Quality Concerns

The major concern for parents is the standard of early childhood education. Several programs are on offer, but parents need to first ensure the quality of the program before making the decision for their children.
