Oxford University Calling Disadvantaged Students

The University of Oxford has now decided to overcome all the acquisitions about being socially exclusive in giving admissions to the middle-class sections of the society. The university is planning to grant admissions to the disadvantaged sections of the UK.

By 2023, the University will have 250 undergraduates from poorer backgrounds of UK states. This has increased the admission rate of under-represented students in the UK by 10%.

Earlier the share was 15% and after the announcement of this new policy, the disadvantaged sections own 25% of seats in the Oxford University. The professor Louise Richardson wishes for a “sea change” in the admission approach of the university.

How does this “sea change” is going to be implemented

Oxford University would now allow the admissions to some students with lower grades under the new scheme. The University has divided its “sea change” into two important access schemes; Opportunity Oxford and Foundation Oxford, accommodating the 250 students under these schemes.

Foundation Oxford is for those students who have a high potential in academic education but are severely disadvantaged or their education has been personally disrupted. This program will last for one year.

The students under the Foundation Oxford scheme will have to pass this year for admission into their desired undergraduate courses. Foundation Oxford accommodates 50 students from the disadvantaged sections of the UK.

Another scheme, Opportunity Oxford is for the remaining 200 students that are from extremely underprivileged parts of the UK who are able to align with the eligibility criteria for grades but require facilitation to get admission in the Oxford University.

Extra support will be given to these students by the University before starting their undergraduate education. Opportunity Oxford will be under action for two weeks. Both the schemes will be funded by the University itself.

What led to this change

Top-ranked universities like Oxford and Cambridge were facing allegations from all over the world for their partiality in admitting only white students and depriving the underprivileged ones of getting admissions.

Higher education regulators are continuously pressurizing these universities to give more admissions to the disadvantaged and deprived backgrounds of UK.

Many studies have reported that Oxford University has been giving the majority of admissions to students from private schools and rejecting the ones from middle-class sections of the society.

As an answer to this, most of the universities started launching schemes that offer admissions to students with lower grades and personally disrupted education.

The schemes by Oxford University aims to support those students who have the potential to score high but lack adequate resources to get admission in their dream university. University signifies that it would still maintain competition but in terms of talent and ability and not in the societal background of the students.

Professor Richardson wants to make sure that every student in the country who has an exceptional academic talent and capability bears a fair chance to get admission to Oxford University. The students who face problems in the transition from the schools will benefit from the two schemes introduced by the University.
