Medical School Personal Statement Examples

When writing your admission statement, it should be an honest and sincere application that states why you chose a career in medicine, who you are as a person. Your report should be written in such a way that it makes you look like a diamond in the ruff.

Admissions want to accept people, not academic scores. They also need candidates to discuss what everyone in this field will be dealing with, from a fresh perspective.

Start with organizing your thoughts, so that you don’t jump from subject to subject. This also helps that you do not repeat yourself. Make a list of your qualities and gather evidence or recall situations that highlight these qualities.

You have to start your statement with an engaging story, and you must demonstrate why you became interested in medicine in the first place in this paragraph.

Medical Admission Statement Example #1

Getting off the elevator on the intensive care unit floor, I went to hug my mother. My grandmother was in that room, fighting for her life.

As I entered her room and saw her in the hospital bed, I felt a closeness like never before. Not as her granddaughter, but as someone who wanted to comfort her and ensure she was doing ok. I felt an intense desire to encourage and support my family.

As the doctor entered the room to explain that her body cannot absorb any more adrenalin to assist in keeping her stable for the operation, he said with lots of empathy that a decision needs to be made.

After that, I volunteered at my local hospital. I wanted to offer comfort and support to sick patients, as well as tired families. Whether it was getting a cup of coffee or holding the patient’s hand, Pushing long hours, and being sleep deprived, I learned that it takes dedication to be a doctor and selflessness.

So many physicians taught me about the immense passion for people. It seeks to be able to put that jacket on and face these patients and families daily. I realized that medicine is so much more than medical jargon, sciences, and treating disease.

During my GAP year, still working voluntary shifts at various hospitals, I did a lot of research within the field. I was interviewing inspiring physicians and patients as part of my daily schedule.

They taught me that medicine also challenges one’s problem-solving skills. Even though medicine is science, medicine is also people. It faces daily challenges, as each case and patient is unique.

Some may come from a disadvantaged background; some may have been healthy for most of their life, and may suddenly be diagnosed with an underlying condition. Learning about all the factors that can influence a patient’s medical report, and then administering my knowledge to provide proper treatment, inspired me to follow my path in meds.

In my experience, humans need more than just a qualified person to give the correct treatment. They deserve someone who always wants to discover new ways to solve their problems.

They need a physician who will explore every possibility to assist in their unique case. I am a person who wants to be able to incorporate my strengths, to give my patients the utmost care. Until I can wear my white jacket, you will find me in the hospital corridors seeking outpatients who need comfort.

Encouraging families are waiting for news on their loved one or peeking over physicians’ shoulders to understand the complex yet enticing ways of being everything my patient needs.

Medical Admission Statement Example #2

Listening to my favourite music station, I asked myself whether I was sure that this was the right thing to do. As I saw Mr Macready sitting on the porch of his small cottage, I was thankful for following my heart. Mr Macready, an older adult, was the first patient I volunteered to transport to and from his dialysis.

The anxiousness I felt by not knowing what to expect was soon overshadowed as this thankful man got into my car. The moment we got to the hospital and was in a wheelchair, I instantly knew this was destined to be.

When it came to my academic abilities and confidence growing up, I could never envision myself attending medical school. What lighted my passion and drive to work harder at school to make my dream a reality?

Upon entering my science class in high school, opening my textbook, and hearing a very inspiring word from my teacher, my fate was sealed. These words she quoted would carry me through every challenge I faced from that day forward:

“When you sign up for being a med student, you signed up for all the hard work you have to do. For all the books you have to read. For all the names, you have to learn. For all the sleep, you have to give up on it. For all the assignments you have to complete. For all the plans, you have to cancel. For all the kindness you have to show. For all the pride, you have to feel, and for all the happiness you have to gain.”

On the way to the hospital, Mr Macready told me about his lifelong struggles with his kidneys, and he shared his experiences with me. I couldn’t hold my tears back as he told me how difficult it was to say to his children about his diagnosed kidney failure.

The worst of his stories was that he felt his doctors looked down on him.

He felt unimportant and foolish as he asked for remedies for his ongoing condition, even before the proper diagnosis.

After this, I went on a medical mission trip to Africa, hoping to help people with limited access to proper health care. I was shocked at the limited available treatments for the people in these villages.

I would make it my life’s mission to aid in rectifying this injustice as I become a physician.

On my way home, I was content with my choice to pursue medicine as a career. Combining medical science with empathy, a passion for what is right, and a love of people, I know this will allow me to succeed as a physician.
