International Students May be Able to Enter in France from July 1

French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs announced that international students could enter in France from July 1. French consulates and embassies abroad will also start processing applications for student visas and residency permits in July.

According to the official statement, “Considering the value of French higher education’s attractiveness, foreign students will be able to move to France, irrespective of their country of origin, and visa procedures will be rendered simpler. Requirements for visas and resident permits will be treated as a priority.’

France has lifted travel limits at the internal European borders. Those who come from the European space (the Member States of the European Union, Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and the Vatican) are now allowed into the country.

The EC proposed that members “should decide on a specific list of non-EU countries for which travel restrictions can be lifted,” adding that “where travel restrictions continue to apply, Member States should ensure the exemption of those travelling to study.”

With other top destinations still lacking a definite date for the end of the lockdown, French stakeholders say this is an essential signal for international students.

“The French Government pursues its desire to attract more foreign students,” a spokesperson for Campus France, Florent Bonaventure, said. European Home Affairs Commissioner Yiva Johansson has said they are proposing a transparent and versatile solution to lifting travel restrictions to the EU.

“To give them the priority is evidence of their contribution to the policy of Bienvenue en France. This recognizes their significant contribution to our universities and our scientific excellence.

“While all of us will have to remain vigilant, the time has come to plan concretely to lift restrictions with countries whose health situation is close to that of the EU and to resume visa operations.” The EC also called on members to “synchronize visa resumption with lifting travel restrictions.”
