Indian Students To Get Benefit From Canada’s Decision To Grant PR to 90K

As many as 40,000 international students could be chosen for permanent residency in Canada under the country’s new one-time immigration program. Students from India who are already in Canada are eligible. Examine the specifics.

The majority of Indian students will benefit from Canada’s new one-time immigration program, which opened for applications on Wednesday. Over 90,000 international students and temporary essential workers in Canada will be granted permanent residency under the program (PR).

It will grant permanent residence to 40,000 international students, 30,000 temporary workers in selected essential occupations, and 20,000 temporary healthcare workers. International students must have completed a post-secondary program in Canada within the last four years to be eligible.

Foreign workers must have at least one year of work experience in Canada in a health care profession or another pre-approved essential occupation. Indian students will benefit more than others because they account for more than a third of all international students in Canada (there were 220,000 last year).

Canada had planned to admit 341,000 immigrants in 2020 before the pandemic halted international travel. The new PR program aims to compensate for the shortfall in immigration numbers in 2020 by prioritizing Canadians already in the country. Furthermore, in 2021, a record 401,000 new immigrants will be admitted.

“The pandemic has shone a bright light on the contributions of newcomers in essential jobs, as we have recognized the caregivers, cooks, and cashiers as our everyday heroes,” Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino said, emphasizing the importance of Wednesday’s program.

With this new path, we recognize their critical role in our economic recovery, allowing them to establish roots in Canada and help us rebuild better. Our message to them is straightforward: your status may be temporary, but your contributions are permanent—and we want you to stay.”
