How do I know if I’m a leader

People often ask, “How do I know if I’m a leader?” First, how do you answer the question? As a good leader, you set the tone for the company. You stand apart and set the tone for everyone else to follow. No one has to tell you to set a high bar or create an inspiring vision. It is your job to do so. It is your job to be a mentor and coach others. It is your job to lead by example, and it is your job to support your team’s success.

“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”
-Steve Jobs

Many people believe the phrase, “Leaders are born” because they don’t realize leaders are born. But every leader starts as a leader. All the great leaders in the world learned how to be great leaders. They worked and earned every minute of every day of their lives. They became experts at helping others to succeed. They created a vision for what they wanted the company to be in the future.

Top 10 tips to become a leader:

1. Believe in yourself. This might sound obvious, but many people don’t believe in themselves. Look at your track record and know that you have already achieved more than most of the people you know. Everyone has their weak spots, and your weaknesses are yours. When you know that, you can move past them.

2. Be humble. You are not going to become a leader overnight. Even if you are the most talented person in your group, you need to practice. When you meet people, and they ask you for advice, listen to them. Be honest and be real. You are not perfect. You are learning to lead. Don’t hide who you are and what you have to offer. Always be willing to help others, even if you don’t know them.

3. Know what you believe. As a leader, you can tell people what you believe and even speak your mind. But it is important to know what you believe. When you don’t know what you believe, you look like a fool. Be aware of your values. Ask yourself why you believe what you do and what your values are. Your values will give you a way to navigate the tough decisions you will face.

4. Celebrate your wins. Leaders can be very tough and critical. When you are with your team or on your own, stop and celebrate your wins. Celebrate what you have already achieved and celebrate what you are doing now. Celebrate and enjoy the journey because it won’t last forever. This way, you will always be able to look back and see all that you accomplished. Your wins and your mistakes will help you to see yourself in a different light.

5. Embrace your weaknesses. Many leaders are very comfortable with their weaknesses. They know that their weaknesses can be strengths. As a leader, you might have to be tough, but embrace your weaknesses. It is easy to look down on others and the way they do things. But, when you are a leader, you are supposed to be a role model. Embrace the weaknesses of those around you.

6. Mentor. If you have a problem, a person, a department, a school, or a church, you can mentor them. You are going to have to mentor those who have not been involved in your career. You will have to be tough, and you will have to mentor them without letting your own weaknesses show. Be honest with your mentee. Find ways to help them without compromising who you are or who you want to be as a leader.

7. Always get feedback. Your employees, your customers, and the people you meet will give you feedback on how you are doing as a leader. The people who matter to you the most will give you the best feedback. As a leader, you have to learn how to listen to the feedback that you are getting. In this way, you can improve and grow.

8. Apologize. People want to be heard and heard well. When you make mistakes, admit them. Apologize if you need to, and be honest about what went wrong. This will set you free and show others that you are willing to grow and change. Apologize when you make mistakes because that is one of the most important things you can do as a leader.

9. Be humble. Even if you are the most talented person in your company, remember that you are still a person. You may be a leader, but that doesn’t make you any better than the people around you. Leaders need to be humble. They need to understand that they are just as smart as the people they lead.

10. Know your strengths. Everyone has a unique personality, and that is something that you need to know about yourself. Don’t try to do things in a way that is not your best. Don’t try to be what others want you to be. Always focus on what you want to be. Always be honest with yourself and be sure that you are on the right path.

Know what you believe and value. What you believe about your company and your purpose are important to your employees and your customers. They will be attracted to you. But, first and foremost, know what you believe about your company and yourself.
