Cost of Study in Italy for Indian Students

1. Tuition Fees

Public Universities: Tuition fees in public universities in Italy depend on the level of degree, and the study program you are pursuing. The average cost of studying in public universities for international students is generally between €850-€1000 per year.

In prestigious public universities, it can even exceed €1000 a year. Indian students will not benefit from the reduction in study cost that is offered to EU students. However, Indian students can get some concession in tuition fees based on parental income.

Private Universities: Cost of studying in private universities is higher for both domestic and international students. However, there is no distinction in tuition prices between EU and non-EU students. Indian Students can expect to pay €6000-€20,000 per year in private universities.

2. Accommodation Cost

35% of the monthly expenses for Indian students are on accommodation. Indian students spend an average of €250-€350 per month on housing. A small percentage of Indian students live in halls of residence while others choose apartments. Accommodation cost on an average is:

  • Private flat:€400 per month
  • Halls of residence: €250-€300 per month
  • Shared flat: € 200 per month per tenant

3. Food Cost

Food is generally quite inexpensive in Italy. Indian students can spend around €200 per month and buy groceries from supermarkets like Lidl, Penny Market, and Esselunga. In Italian restaurants, any meal starts with antipasto that costs €8-€15.

Pasta dishes cost around €6-€12 while meat or fish dishes cost €8-€16. Indian students can have a sandwich or a slice of pizza at the university cafeteria or ‘mensa’ for €2-€3. Since booking a table at any Italian restaurant costs almost double than takeaways, students can opt for food take outs.

4. Transportation Cost

Public transportation is the most convenient way to travel to Italy. Indian students can book a monthly ticket for bus, tram or metro at €25-€35. In cities like Milan, you can rent a bike for €6 a week.

5. Lifestyle Cost

Indian students must estimate a budget of €700-€1000 per month for various supplementary expenses excluding accommodation, food costs, public transportation, local sightseeing, and entertainment. Living costs in Italy are generally not high, but Rome is more expensive than in other cities.

Utility cost in Italy including gas, water, and electricity can run up to €140 per month. Movie tickets and night outs in Italy cost another €50 a week. Additional academic costs like books and educational supplies cost €40-€50 per month. Costs of living for Indian students in some Italian cities are:

  • Bologna: €750-€1100 per month
  • Florence: €850-€1300 per month
  • Milano, Rome: €850-€1450 per month

6. Visa Fees

Since India is a non-European Union country, Indian students have to pay €50 as visa fees. Indian students must check all details about visa before applying for Italian universities.
