Cost of Study in Australia for Indian Students

1. Tuition Fees

Australia has 40 public universities; two international and one private university and tuition fees depend on the course of study and the institute. Studying is quite expensive for Indian students and can cost around $33,000. Bachelor’s degree courses range in $15000-$33000 and Master’s and Ph.D. degree courses cost between $17000-$37000.

2. Accommodation Cost

Majority of Indian students find a home to stay with a local family or a guest house since only a small number of student dormitories are available at the university. Renting price of apartments vary depending on cities. Most common accommodation options for Indian students:

  • Home stay: $440 –$ 1,080 per month
  • Guest houses: $320 – $540  per month
  • Halls of residence: $320 -$1,000 per month
  • Apartment: $1,700 per month

3. Food Costs

Indian students can shop for groceries at cheap supermarkets like Aldi, Coles, and Woolworths for $100-$200 per week. The average price of a meal at an inexpensive restaurant is $18 while a three-course meal can cost $40 each. Australia has the facility of a large number of Asian, Greek and Italian restaurants and a variety of cuisine.

4. Transportation Costs

Some universities have a private transport supplier to help students staying on campus to reach some difficult areas. Indian students can also enroll in the ACTION program by the Australian government to get free transport. Some Australian states have discount programs for transports like QLD for Queensland, SA for South Australia or VIC for Melbourne. In general public transport cost for Indian students range between $30-$70 per month. You can also rent a bicycle for $40 per day.

5. Lifestyle Cost

Generally, Indian students living in Australia spend between $1500-$2500 per month to cover all their living expenses, including accommodation, food, and social activities. Apart from rent, utility cost including gas, water, and electricity is around $200 per month.

Internet costs shared between tenants is around $70 per month. Indian students must also apply for health insurance which starts at $30 per month. Academic supplies including books can cost over $1000 per year. VISA cost is around $360 per year. The average budget of some Australian cities are:

  • Sydney: starting $1,900 per month
  • Adelaide: starting at $1,300 per month
  • Brisbane: starting at $1,400 per month
  • Melbourne: starting at $1,500 per month

6. Scholarships for Students

Australia Awards – Australian Government funds fellowships and scholarships that cover full tuition fees, travel expenses, and part of the monthly living costs, among others.

APEC Women in Research Fellowship Program –Financial support which is dedicated to female researchers from developing APEC economies.

Endeavour Postgraduate Awards – Financial support to international students who enroll in a Master’s or Ph.D. degree.
