China Government Funding 20% More for Foreign Students

According to fresh figures published by the Ministry of Education in view of the recent resentment of alleged bias towards international students in Chinese universities, government floating for international students increased by more than 20% last year in China.

The Ministry said, ‘there is a need to improve the “quality” of foreign students in some institutions’.

Between 2012 and 2019, the funds allocated to foreign students exceeded the scholarship, rising from 1.55 billion yuan ($ 225 million) to 3.92 billion yuan this year.

In 2018, 63,000 international students received Chinese government scholarship, which was 12.8% of the total number of foreign students in China.

According to a representative of the ministry, China has signed student exchange agreements with more than 180 countries.

Funding from the Ministry of Education mostly takes the form of scholarships paid to the universities attended by foreign scholars. The money is an allowance for living expenses received directly by the scholars.

Earlier this month, Shandong University reported on the practice of handing over many local women “buddies” to male international students, in which some people were instigated on Chinese social media as partisan towards foreigners.

On July 12, the University apologized for the students who took part in the buddy program for “lack of strict investigation” and “unfair choice”.

State-backed Global Times reported that angry women over the program which encourages students of Shandong University to do wrong online attacks as well as to harass on the campus.

The Ministry of Education said in a statement that it would “crackdown on illegal situations” involving foreign students, even as it continues to see foreign students in China as a way to grow the “international influence of China’s education and promote mutual understanding and friendship between Chinese people and foreigners.”
