In a significant boost to international students, the Canadian government has announced the International Education Strategy (IES), Building on Success and International Mobility Program.
The program will be administered by the Minister of International Trade Diversification and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Canada’s national budget for 2019/20 announced significant funding to provides for an initial expenditure of CDN$147.9 million (US$110 million) over five years to support the new IES program.
The IES program will help to expand opportunities for talented international students and foreign workers to build flourishing careers in Canada. This is also intended to support several Canadians who want to study or work abroad.
The newly announced funding will stress on enhancing the mobility of students while also encouraging new investments outside Canada that can help expand the country’s international student base.
The pilot program, supervised by Employment and Social Development Canada and jointly administered by CICan and Universities Canada, has been allocated $95m over yield years and will provide financial assistance ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 a year.
International students make a vital economic contribution in Canada.
In 2018, foreign students in Canada added over $21 billion to Canada’s economy and helped nearly 170,000 jobs for Canada’s middle class.
The IES also priorities less traditional destinations such as Asia and Latin America to expand access to quality education to all students.
Other countries like the UK, Australia and USA also recognize the importance of the international students and their long-term benefits of harbouring international students. These countries have upped their game, and to remain competitive, and therefore Canada has also changed their immigration policy.
