In a significant boost to international students, the Canadian government has announced the International Education Strategy (IES), Building on Success and International Mobility Program.
The program will be administered by the Minister of International Trade Diversification and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Canada’s national budget for 2019/20 announced significant funding to provides for an initial expenditure of CDN$147.9 million (US$110 million) over five years to support the new IES program.
The IES program will help to expand opportunities for talented international students and foreign workers to build flourishing careers in Canada. This is also intended to support several Canadians who want to study or work abroad.
The newly announced funding will stress on enhancing the mobility of students while also encouraging new investments outside Canada that can help expand the country’s international student base.
The pilot program, supervised by Employment and Social Development Canada and jointly administered by CICan and Universities Canada, has been allocated $95m over yield years and will provide financial assistance ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 a year.
