Best Self-help Books

When it comes to hearing the same old clichés, one of the most persistent ones that we hear all too often is “self-help is the best help.” This simple piece of advice isn’t wrong at all. Most people find their successes all the more empowering if they can get through the problematic barriers on their own.

It is essential to keep in mind that a great book can only do so much- it can push you, motivate you, and inspire you. It may even change your outlook on life for the better. But the best kind of self-help is taking inspiration from these beautiful books and making an active change in your own life.

So in whatever way you are looking for help to move forward in your life, here are some of the best self-help books you can read:

The Alchemist- Paolo Coelho

When we think of self-help books, we rarely think that a fiction novel is going to make it into this list. However, Paolo Coelho is a writer like no other, and his book, The Alchemist, is one of the most excellent self-help books that you can read.

The author takes you along the journey of Santiago, who is an Andalusian shepherd boy. Santiago, who has big dreams of travelling the world in search of a big treasure, is how the story begins. As he travels along his journey, he encounters an alchemist and goes on to find ‘treasures.’

You don’t even have to be religious, or even agnostic, to be able to find value in this book. The essential wisdom of looking for the right signs along your journey, of listening to your heart, and, most important, of discovering what your dreams are, and following them through, is what this book will teach you.

The Power of Now- Eckhart Tolle

There comes a time in many people’s lives where we are looking for a little something more significant than motivating words and inspiring stories. If you are in that stage of your light where you are looking towards spiritual enlightenment as a way to get to know yourself better, then The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle is the book you should turn to.

The power of being present, living in the present, and calming down our monkey minds is something we hear about enough. But do you have the right tools to be able to do that to successfully calm down the chatter in your head? When talking about spiritual enlightenment, Tolle introduces you to the biggest and most challenging enemy that you will face on this journey- your mind.

The Road Less Traveled- M Scott Peck

When a self-help book begins with the words “Life is difficult,” you know that you are about to step into a journey of intense retrospection, introspection, and the painful process of confronting our demons.

The Road Less Traveled has three sections, each of which deals beautifully and certainly with a different aspect of our lives. When it comes to confronting the big problems, most of us habitually shy away from the challenge and choose to avoid the issue altogether.

Whether you know it or not already, this is not the solution. The solution is to stand up, confront the problems head-on, and find the right solutions which work for you individually.

When we understand the meaning and importance of loving and nurturing relationships in our lives, when we know how to be a good parent to our children, and when we understand how to draw the line between love and dependency, it opens up a whole new road for us, something we never thought of travelling along before.

Well, as the title of the book suggests, M Scott Peck decides to take you through this road and on this journey of self-discovery and eventually into building a better version of yourself.

Man’s Search for Meaning- Viktor E. Frankl

The holocaust is one of the most horrifying experiences any human being would go through. For most people, it is difficult to read about, to think about, even to imagine happening to someone else, forget ourselves.

Viktor E. Frankl learns spiritual and emotional lessons during his horrifying experience in the Nazi death camps. However, instead of being overly present at the moment, feeling all the horrors and thinking about the uncertainty of his life, he focuses on good memories of the past, or of his future.

He uses psychological techniques to understand precisely what is going on around him in the camp- the behaviour of the guards, the fellow prisoners, and even of himself. He argues that also though this suffering is genuine and inevitable, he (and we) can choose how we cope with it, and how we think about it.

Although we humans don’t always have a clear choice in the circumstances we have to face in life. We do have a clear choice in how we wish to react to the events. His testament and his optimism throughout his stay in the Nazi death camp is something that moves readers across the world for generations.

We learn that it is not the desire for pleasure that can drive us forward in life; instead, it is the discovery and the constant pursuit of what each individual finds meaning in their life.
