Why Some International Students Can’t Sleep?

You are here: Home / Blog / Why Some International Students Can’t Sleep?

November 26, 2019 //  by Amit Kumar

One of the things that everyone loves is sleeping. Adequate sleep is really necessary for our body. Without it, we can’t function at our peak. For students, it is of considerable significance. According to studies, students who don’t sleep well too often catch on things very poorly. Their reflexes go down, and their learning capacity diminishes.

But it is a common thing when we can’t sleep well when we go to a new environment. This is why it gets hard for internal students to sleep well. You are out in another country far from your home. Some students also go through homesickness. For some students, it gets better with time, but for some, it keeps on worsening.

This can be a massive block for someone who wants to study hard to secure good grades. That is why here are some of the tips that you can follow if you are an international student and even if you are not, this will work for you:

Table of Contents

  • 1. Exercise Better
  • 2. Eat Good Food
  • 3. Don’t Nap Anytime
  • 4. Put Your Phone Down
  • 5. Don’t Spend Too Much Time On Bed
  • 6. Don’t Stress a Lot
  • 7. Get Up Early
  • Conclusion

1. Exercise Better

Our bodies are evolved to move and not sit in chairs and desks all day long. So, if you are not able to sleep well, then you should start exercising. You can join a gym, or you can even run daily if you want to save gym money. Exercising will make you feel good and also tire your body so when you go back to your room and lie down on your bed, you will feel sleepy.

2. Eat Good Food

Sometimes when we don’t eat good food, our body isn’t able to digest the food properly. This can create quite a problem for you in the long run. Yes, there is no home food available when you are in a different country, but you can still go for local vegetables and cook them on your own. Bad food increases inflammation in your body, which may make you feel uncomfortable, and it will affect you a lot in general and not just your sleep. Don’t consume a lot of caffeine, and it will not let your body sleep.

3. Don’t Nap Anytime

Students don’t generally have a fixed routine for napping. Our bodies want to know when to sleep. But when we don’t let a routine form, we don’t let our body know if it is time to relax or not. This creates a problem when we try to sleep early at some nights and then don’t sleep at all on some. Also, don’t nap in the day time. If you sleep in the noons, how do you expect that you will be able to sleep at night?

4. Put Your Phone Down

Yes, not being your parent here. But put your phone down an hour before you are planning to sleep. It is because your phones, laptops, and any device that you use while in bed emit blue light. The blue light signals your brain that it is day time and not the time to sleep. This is why, most of us when we take our phones and laptops to bed, our sleep is gone. Also, the lights in your room dim them an hour before you want to sleep. It will induce your mind and body to feel tired a little, and that will help you sleep.

5. Don’t Spend Too Much Time On Bed

When you spend too much time in your bed, your body feels like it has rested a lot already. That is why, whether you have to Skype someone or work on that assignment, find some other place to do it, but don’t do it on your bed.

6. Don’t Stress a Lot

When you stress a lot, your body will not be able to sleep properly. Be it stress because of your failed relationships or stress because of your studies, in hindsight, and nothing is as important as your sleep. For relieving yourself of stress, you can try meditation. It has helped a lot of people. It also helps the body to sleep better by making the breathing pattern and energy consumption more active during sleep.

7. Get Up Early

This is the oldest trick for getting better sleep. When you wake up early, you might feel tired throughout the day if you have slept late. But it is worth it if, in the long run, it helps you sleep early and efficiently. When you wake up early and eat well, meditate, and don’t nap in the day, and exercise sufficiently, no one can stop you from sleeping like a baby soon at night. From the next morning, you can again get up early, but the next day, you would have got enough sleep already. This would set in place a chain of events that would make your routine great.

Conclusion

A night of good sleep is an essential thing for students. If you are not sleeping well, you won’t be able to concentrate on what is being taught to you. Even if you are an international student in a new place, just focus on the points above.

In addition to this, you can also find yourself a comfortable mattress so that when you lie down, you are not thinking about anything that makes you uncomfortable. You can also keep your room clean and hygienic so you are more comfortable and sometimes a little bit of air fresher can help a lot.
