What Should You Know About the Grading System?

What Is a Passing Grade in College

October 6, 2020 //  by Amit Kumar

For college students, hard work is necessary to get decent grades. It is significant to give your 100% to college classes. In particular, you need to work hard in your major. Several people ask a question: what is a passing grade in college?

Before attending college, students generally have a high school grading system in mind. The college grading system does not differ much from that of high school. For example, a D is a passing grade both in high school and college, as it is 60% or above. Therefore, the minimum passing percentage is 60%. However, you would like to secure marks of more than 60%. With a little effort, you can achieve high grades.

In fact, grades matter as they contribute to your overall GPA. A good GPA helps you get admission to a reputable institute for further education.

Importance of Grades in a College

In general, grades reflect your performance. In other words, college grades define you as a student. If you stay focused on the class, take notes regularly, then you will be in a position to secure reasonable grades.

Some teachers use a relative grading system, which means they grade on a curve. Thus, changing the conventional grading scale and using a system in relation to how most of the students are performing. On the other hand, many teachers apply the standard or general grading system.

According to the standard grading scale, 90% and above is an A, 80 to 90% is a B grade, and so on. Every teacher uses a different method of calculating grades. Some give more weightage to exams while others deem course assignments and projects more important.

In the beginning, your college teachers provide information about grading criteria. You need to pay attention to every instructor so that you have clarity about the marking system. Securing good grades is important if:

You Aim to Get Admission to Grad School

For a graduate school, your undergraduate school grades are one of the most significant aspects that the admission committee considers. Besides, the admission process includes more than just grades, such as recommendation letters, test scores, personal statements, and others.

If you have secured high grades in your undergraduate school, you will be in a strong position to prove your candidacy for graduate school. Besides, your grades will indicate your commitment and dedication toward studies.

Your Potential Employer May Consider Your Grades

In today’s world, the job market is getting highly competitive. In this context, several employers determine your capabilities through your grades. If you do not have experience in the sector you are looking for work, then your grades will count. Sometimes, the job interviewers ask for your CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average).  Hence, a good CGPA may increase your chances of getting a job.

Is “D” a Passing Grade

Academically, a “D” counts as a passing grade and is not a failure. However, It’s a threshold, i.e., 60-69%. If the percentage falls below 60%, then it’s a failure. Although D is a passing grade, it is not favorable academically.

A Student should strive for reasonable grades, and not just the passing marks. If you have a fear of getting a D, then seek help from your professors and class fellows.

First, identify the areas or topics where you are feeling difficulties. In the next step, seek help from your professors or classmates. With a little attention and hard work, you can improve.

Pass or No Pass Classes

A few institutes allow you to take subjects for pass/no pass instead of an alphabetical grade. In that case, a D is usually not passing.  A passing grade is generally a C or higher. Also, these courses do not add to your GPA as there is no alphabetical grade against a numeric value.

GPAs and Their Purpose

Irrespective of getting passing grades to graduate, your marks/grades count to your GPA. Colleges calculate it by giving a numeric value to alphabetical grades and then divide by the number of courses. Graduate schools take into account your GPA when you apply there.

A good GPA is your introduction as a student. If you have secured a good GPA in college, you can mention it in your resume. A GPA of 3.2 or above is decent enough. Even a GPA of 3 is reasonable. GPA is a representation of your grades; a GPA of 3.2 means you have secured a B grade on average. If you only pass the course, you won’t be able to secure a good GPA.

Options for Students If They Struggle

Occasionally, even passing a course might seem difficult. You may struggle to focus on your course for some reason. Under such a situation, consider dropping the course or take extra classes. Several students have to work part-time to meet their expenses. For this reason, they may lose their focus in certain courses. So, it’s better for them to consider taking the course next time instead of getting a D or an F.

Dropping a course might take you a bit longer to complete your degree, but it won’t affect your GPA. Before dropping a course, it’s better to consult with your teacher. A college may show a W (Withdrawal) on your report card, and consecutive W’s may lead to your dismissal from the college. To be on a safe side, consult with college administration or professors. Do not hesitate to ask.

Conclusion

In college, students can achieve passing grades. However, they should aim for higher. The minimum passing grade is a D, which means a percentage of 60-69%. Good grades contribute to your GPA. Focus, commitment, and hard work will enable you to secure good marks. If you find difficulty in any course, do not hesitate to consult with your professor and classmates. On some occasions, you may need guidance to understand the concepts of your course. Similarly, dropping a course may save you from getting a D or an F; but, take this step after proper consultation with your professor or admission counselor.
