Introduction

“What university should I go to?” is a complicated question. Many people will instantly tell you to refer to the list of the best universities in the world and America. However, the truth may be somewhat different. We will tell you that you should choose the faculty or university that best suits your needs, and that your decision must not necessarily be based on the ranking of the university on the mentioned list.

There are many criteria regarding the choice of university. Let’s take a look at the most important ones when it comes to American universities.

Application and acceptance criteria

Even though the application procedures are nowadays standardized in the majority of the world’s renowned universities, as well as the top 10 American universities, most students shrink from long, exhausting, and demanding application procedures with not so promising outcomes.

That’s why you should be smart, know your GPA ranking, and focus on the range of the universities that accept students with your GPA, SAT/GRE, and/or TOEFL results.

However, don’t be desperate and keep your hopes high, as an impeccable motivational letter can beat your competition if you prove that your personality, goals, and plans for the future match the mission and vision of the university you are applying to.

Majors and minors

The choice of the majors and minors offered at the particular university should play a very important role in the choice of the university. You should know exactly what you want before applying. You should at least have two or three backup options.

Moreover, choosing a university that offers attractive minors accompanying your major degree is a wise decision. In addition, enrolling in a university with the flexible first semester, i.e. changing your decision after one or two semesters is also a good option.

The cost

One of the criteria for determining your university choices is the cost. Availability for the “non-rich” category is of the utmost importance for most of the students.

Lots of universities, including Harvard, are working on making a step forward in adapting their politics to become more accessible to candidates who mark themselves as financially weaker.

More than three hundred and seventy-two-year-old Harvard, whose financial fund amounts to nearly $35 billion, announced last December that they are raising financial packages offered to students from families who earn less than $180,000 a year. Somewhat more cost-friendly universities are becoming more and more popular among both local and international students.

Ranking

Even though analyzing university rankings is very popular among the future students and universities compete each year to rank better and better, this does not have to be your ultimate landmark.

You should know that there are lots of factors affecting the final ranking and that some of them might not be so important for you.

Conclusion

Therefore, the best piece of advice we can give you is to inform yourself on the studying conditions, teaching staff, research-oriented environment, space for innovation and student creativity, as well as life on campus and student exchange programs before choosing your university.
