Every individual begins a new phase of life from the first day that they register in school and usually occurs when the individual is between 3 to 5 years old. It is typically a journey filled with a plethora of experiences, adventures, and high motivation by kith and kin.
The teachers, parents, and elders all join forces to encourage us, telling us that with Education, our future will be bright. At the elementary school level, we were always on the lookout for every new schoolday.
The lessons were fresh, new things taught daily, and every moment was almost unforgettable in our lives. Time unfolds a lot of things. The lessons became monotonous. Classes became repetitive and very dull.
We began to look forward to holidays and breaks instead of the next school day. Indeed, the excitement withered and faded away in the long run.
Now, the big question is why our excitement dwindled as we grew older. At childhood, we all had dreams and aspirations, and everyone told us that we could only fulfil those dreams by going to school. Could this be the actual purpose of Education?
I ponder deeply about the actual purpose of Education. Now let’s go on to the benefits of the subject matter.
1. Education Boosts the Achievement of Life Goals
It is fair to say that the primary purpose of Education is to imbibe in the Child the passion and curiosity about learning so that they can grow to become useful adults. Education instils in learners the urge to fulfil their life goals and to leave schools with focus and dedication in contributing positively to society.
2. Education Comes with Financial Gains
In the current dispensation, there is immense dynamism, and the focal point of learners has moved from morals to financial gains. The educational environment has also changed, and many now leverage the economic benefits inherent in acquiring Education.
Today, many parents push their wards to focus on passing exams in flying colours. They then promote them to fight tooth and nail in gaining admission into a prestigious university to study a lucrative and highly respectable course.
Later on, they are focused on getting a white-collar job, which is profitable. With Education, there is a massive advantage for material and financial success, and this has been very beneficial to children who are focused on maintaining academic excellence.
Today, Parents pressurize their kids to study courses that will fetch them a fat salary so that they will live comfortably.
3. Education Instils Moral Values in Children
The early stage of Education is tailored towards equipping children with values and morals. Firstly, they are taught how to greet, courtesy, and how to show respect to the elderly ones.
Subjects such as citizenship education or civic Education are usually introduced in the elementary school to teach good behaviour and morals in the kids. Teaching starts at home. Parents no longer wait for their kids to be old enough to go to school; thus, the kids are taught the basic morals.
4. Educated People are Highly Respected People
It is quite right that people are respected and highly revered according to their level of Education. Highly trained people such as professors, Doctors, Barristers, etc. enjoy immense respect and recognition by people in society.
More so, Education is an excellent booster of self-esteem and confidence. An educated person will have the boldness to speak and address anyone anywhere without fear.
5. Education Discovers and Nurtures Hidden Talents
Remember the quote made by Albert Einstein, ”Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, then it will spend the whole of its life believing that it is stupid.”
Albert Einstein, a genius, was a victim as he failed multiple times during his school days. He did not pass prominent examinations, and his teachers concluded that he was stupid.
Our education system rendered one of the greatest geniuses as foolish and dull. He was not able to pass high school exams and was misjudged. Considering the case of Albert Einstein, we can assume that thousands of geniuses have also been underestimated as stupid, and their talents have not been identified.
To make matters worse, a lot of them have not taken the bold step to try out something different like Albert Einstein. It is quite glaring that a lot is left to be done for our school system to reposition itself as the hub of talent discovery.
Every Child is born with a drop of greatness. They all have talents, and the skills are supposed to be developed and nurtured by the school. Some children are naturally talented in crafts, some in music, and some are talented in Arts.
Forcing all the children into the academic filed is nothing but a disaster to many. The school focused on academics, and this has stifled the passion of many children. Lots of kids out there lose passion for Education because the education system has not recognized their strengths; neither has it developed it.
Everyone is unique in their way, and they also have different advantages. We should not expect Michael Jackson, a musician, to have the mind of Michael Faraday.
These two individuals are embedded with differential talents. The only thing we should expect from them is for them to have the same level of passion for what they do.
6. Education Prepares the Individual for the Labour Market
There is no doubt that the present system of Education is beneficial in moulding students for the labour market. As the days go by, students are subjected to different versions of tests and examinations across higher levels of academics, and the results seem to be very encouraging.
They spend days and months studying across various fields such as mathematics, life sciences, etc. This widens their scope and makes them versatile for several roles.
Today, the number of students registering for international and national exams has been increasing geometrically. They are taught how to harness their festivities, persevere, and maintain a strong interpersonal relationship with others.
Wrapping Up
It is high time for the gladiators of the education system to revert and focus on the actual purpose of Education, which is discovering the abilities of children to instigate their passion and lubricate their success. Children who are allowed to concentrate in their area of strength will have a burning desire.
They will be highly motivated to face the challenges, persevere, and overcome obstacles on their way to stardom. With this, boredom and apathy towards Learning will become a forgotten issue.
