What Don’t Doctors Get to Study in Medical School?

You are here: Home / Others / What Don’t Doctors Get to Study in Medical School?

November 28, 2019 //  by Amit Kumar

The initial point to be noted is that you will not feel like a medical student in the beginning. Everything you do in the first year will not resemble anything to a doctor’s carrier at least during the first year in medical school. You have to learn a foreign language, and you will be in minimal or no contact with the patients.

Medical training is generally tricky and lengthy. Many premedical courses may not have the complete grasp of what you tend to earn during your medical schooling. This is what a dedicated medical carrier looks like.

First and Second Year in College

The first and the second year will be just basics if science and human anatomy. This will more likely be like what you did in your college. This is the preclinical phase after which you will face the USMLE step 1 a national standardized exam on scoring high in this test will have a significant impact during your residency placement.

The second and fourth year are generally clinical or clerkship based after which you will have a speciality-specific subject exam called the self-exam developed by the National Board of Medical examiners. During the fourth year, you will have to undergo the USMLE step 2 exam. It is a must that you clear this exam to get graduated as a doctor and practice medicine.

Fourth-year

During the beginning of the fourth year, you will have to apply for the residency program and submit a rank list based on your areas of interest. You will receive interviews for the residency during the fall or early winter. Their match results are published during March in a student ceremony.

You will not have choices to choose the location for residency. Once the match list is published, it is final. A residency program can take anywhere from four to seven years. During this program, you will have to complete the USMLE Step 3 exam. This is the completion certificate for US doctorate along with some more speciality exams.

Overall the effort one needs to put to become a doctor is not simple and easy. There are numerous exams that one should face and clear throughout the medical course. The challenges are very high and will not end once you step into medical schooling. You should be dedicated, focused and be aware of the commitment needed in this medical carrier before you opt to select a medical school.
