UNM Invites International Students Despite Travel Advice

You are here: Home / Blog / UNM Invites International Students Despite Travel Advice

August 20, 2019 //  by Amit Kumar

“Traveling abroad is challenging,” said Nicole Tami, executive director of Global Education Initiatives at UNM GEO. “Each country and individual local has its own inherent challenges and dangers that must be maneuvered. Even the safest destinations are not without risk.”

After the two mass shootings that resulted in killing 32 people in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, The University of New Mexico Global Education Office has said the travel advisories issued against the United States by Uruguay and Venezuela.

But on the other hand, that didn’t affect the number of students that want to attend and complete their education in UNM in the fall semester or the number of students wishing to study abroad. This can make people’s lives in risk as no one knows when will the next incident be not, nor do they know how to stop it from happening.

According to CEO world Magazine 2019 Index Albuquerque, along with Detroit and Baltimore – as a city to avoid since it was listed as one of the 20 most dangerous cities in the world, Albuquerque ranked 18 on the list of most dangerous cities out of the 334 cities analyzed for the index, They listed Caracas, Venezuela as the most dangerous city in the world.

Nicole Tami, executive director of Global Education Initiatives at UNM GEO also said that Regardless of wherever the students are from, the perceptions of Albuquerque as an unsafe place is generated by (both) real and fictitious source like ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’ which also give away all the thing that has been doing in the past month.

She said that these show the people what has been happening and what might happen if they live in that region.

She also said that these travel advisories against the U.S. do create an opportunity to have a discussion on the world’s perspective of the United States; (They) are a reminder that the opinion of the U.S. can vary by country and changes depending on who is in power.

Safety in the UNM has been a hot topic going into to the 2019- 2020 school year, they have been trying so hard to keep people alive for as long as possible and make them feel as safe as possible. President Garnett Stokes tried to solve the problem in a modern municipal hall.

The issue was also tried to solve at the most recent Board meeting, which proves that they want to solve it as soon as possible so that the people would go back to their normal lives without any danger on their lives.

President Garnett Stokes said the UNM Police Department plans to increase their force by six new officers and is working to organize a new campus safety task force. The University also recently has been trying to know whether it is possible or not putting a fence around campus to help with campus safety.

The university has a counting thing to know how many students in the university are Latinos which was the main target of the shooting in August 3rd, nearly 48 percent of undergraduates at the university is listed as Hispanic.

So, to sum this up, the university has been doing it’s best to keep the students safe by increase guarding and building fences, and also that the shooting wasn’t able to decrease the students’ need to study and build themselves a good life.
