UK Immigration: How is Brexit Affecting International Students to Study in the UK?

You are here: Home / Immigration / UK Immigration: How is Brexit Affecting International Students to Study in the UK?

February 19, 2020 //  by Amit Kumar

The decision of Britain leaving the European Union is termed as Brexit. Britain finally left the European Union on January 31, 2020, after a lot of postponement.

While the UK has finalized that they are not a part of the European Union, there is still confusion over what the future of both the sides will look like. The rest of the year, which is till December 31, 2020, is decided to be the transition period.

During these 11 months, both sides will decide how they are going to trade with each other. They will also discuss how the economic and political decisions will be be taken in the future.

Students who are now applying for studying in the UK will apply in a country which has exited the European Union. This has raised questions over the future of the students who are going to study there. Because the opportunities will now change for the students, visa requirements and employment rules can change.

However, the British Deputy High Commission has assured the aspiring students not to worry about anything. Nothing will affect the career opportunities of the students.

Students Don’t Know What is Going On!

The students who are studying in the United Kingdom said that they had no clue about what is going on. There are no law changes that have been made clear yet from the government.

Following Brexit, there is utter confusion in the minds of the students who are preparing for the college applications for the UK. Because they don’t have a clear indication of what is going to happen.

For the students who are already completing their education said that they hadn’t been instructed about any changes that may affect their future. So, this can be looked at as a good thing. This would mean that no changes have come in the life of students from Brexit.

One question which did come up was whether the cost of education would rise or not. Brexit can bring changes in the laws in the future, which can result in a more expensive education for students.

In addition to this, one of the students raised concerns about the new changes that can come in the future regarding the work visas. But the visa changes that arrive can also prove to be more straightforward and it will be made with an intent to invite students to come to the UK and study there.

Now the visa process to go to the UK is not very simple. There is a need to simplify the process visa application.

No Changes In The Transition Period

The UK has to follow all the same rules it was following when it was a part of the EU until the time transition period ends. For now, all the new rules and regulations between the two sides are being worked at.

Since the relationship between the two parties is the same for now, the students applying now will not have to go through any new process. Everything remains the same for now.

Brexit Isn’t Focused At Discriminating

The British Deputy High Commission issued a statement. In that statement, they said that the UK recognizes the essential contributions international students make to the country. These students add both to the cultural and economic sector of the UK.

This is why the UK government is pretty clear that it isn’t looking to impose any restrictions on any particular group of students. The UK government is still looking to attract more international students.

New Grad Route and Post Study Offer

Last year in September 2019, the UK government announced a new grad route for students. Now students who have completed their studies in the UK can have a work offer as well.

This offer is only available for students who have completed their studies at an undergraduate level at least and above. Also, to be eligible for the offer, the student must have a Tier 4 visa at the time when the application is made.

This new route will be officially put into action from summer 2021. So anyone who meets the above requirements can apply for the new grad route. All the students who are accepted under the program will be given a two-year non-extendable leave.

These students will be able to apply for work, but won’t be able to access the public funds. Also, a certain fee will be levied for which no amount has been determined yet.

Working in the UK Becomes Easier

More than 56,000 people from India were provided with a Tier 2 work visa by the British government. The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson announced last month a new program – Global Talent Route. This program is all set to start from February 20, 2020.

People who are excellent in developing new technologies and are great at mathematics and engineering can now take advantage of this program and come to the UK for further education and work opportunities.

The job opportunities are to be increased for international students planning to study in the UK. Now the UK won’t have any intervention from the EU, so there will be more vacant job fields for international students.

Even though working in the UK is likely to become easier, studying can get harder. If you are a student who is going to complete an integrated course which will be half in Europe and half in the UK, you can face several problems now.

The students who opted for this particular program were told that the terms and conditions are subject to change after Brexit takes place. But the terms and conditions haven’t been made clear by the government or the universities which offer such courses.

The UK government is on the outlook for the future of their students. The government confirmed that they will make the process as easy as possible for international students.
