Top 7 Ways to Improve Memory

May 21, 2019 //  by Amit Kumar

Who wouldn’t like to have a photographic memory? Well, attaining that feature is difficult but not impossible. We all have seen such people who even in their older age remember even the most ordinary details of the past subject. It would be a time saver for people if they don’t forget where they have last put their car keys.

In the case of students, good scores will be confirmed in educational programs with having a sharp memory. You can always climb your way up the memory ladder with the help of various techniques used to increase brain power.

Given below are some of the effective ways which can help in improving your memory to a great extent.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Eating Healthy
  • 2. Start Exercising
  • 3. Take Power Naps
  • 4. Indulge Yourself in Brain Workout
  • 5. Changing Daily Routine
  • 6. Adding Caffeine and Subtracting Alcohol
  • 7. Relaxing With Meditation

1. Eating Healthy

A healthy diet promises you a healthy mind and good life. It not only improves your physical abilities but also increases your mental capabilities. Food items which contain sulfur compounds and phytochemicals are considered best for improving memory and reversing memory loss. These sulfur edibles include kale, arugula, spinach, chard, and cruciferous veggies.

Another important healthy food nutrient found to boost memory is fat. Fat is used as an insulator for nerves cell. Better insulation means better response time in terms of thinking. A great source of fat for both young and old age person is the whole milk and certain fishes like wild salmon, anchovies, and mackerel.

2. Start Exercising

If you want to have a good memory even in your old age then moving your body and shaking your legs can definitely help you attain your goal. Exercise let you fight obesity which happens to be harmful to your brain health in the long term. A lazy person is more prone to plaque buildups in arteries. The negative buildups are responsible for the decrease in vital nutrients and oxygen supply to the brain through the blood.

If important nutrients won’t reach the brain then its functionality will definitely be compromised. Therefore doing exercise, swimming, dancing or even walking briskly is quite useful for improving your brain power. Various studies have recommended that a six-week exercise program will have a constructive effect on improving memory and intellectual functionality.

3. Take Power Naps

Various research studies have proved that taking a nap just after you learn something new recharges your brain and sharpens it enough to fuse the information well. The term “power nap” is not just mere words; it is a real wonder.

During power naps, the mind processes information and memories so that you can recall them later. Ideally, a power nap is of 10-20 minutes duration and if it falls between 1pm-3pm then even better it is. For adults, seven to eight hours of night sleep is recommended for improving memory.

4. Indulge Yourself in Brain Workout

It is a natural phenomenon for a brain to act dull if it is not involved in mind using activities now and then. An active brain is key to having improved memory. One can play an instrument or choose a different route while driving so that mental capabilities are regularly tested.

It is wise to indulge yourself in activities like solving crossword puzzles, reading newspapers, and playing card games such as solitaire and bridges in order to boost your memory by causing stimulation in brain cells. Especially people with symptoms of dementia should go through such brain-stimulating activities every day.

It is to be noted that there are techniques referred to as “mnemonic devices” which uses different mediums like images, sentences or words to help you remember and encode the significant information.

5. Changing Daily Routine

If someone follows the same routine every day then life tends to get boring and the brain is not encountering with new and challenging situations. Switching up ones’ daily routine and going through uncomfortable situation is very important to enhance memory and brain power.

Bumpy circumstances command more cohesive attention so your mind automatically gets focused and act in a competent way to hold on to the details more effectively. Therefore all the people who worry about improving their memory should try spicing up their life by changing their daily groove every now and then. This will not only enhance their memory ability but also will make their life adventurous.

6. Adding Caffeine and Subtracting Alcohol

One of the easy ways to improve memory retention power is to add caffeine in your life. Having the most commonly used caffeine drink like coffee has a proven track of helping in enhancing brain function in the old age people.

On the other hand drinks like alcohol are held responsible for having a bad effect on cognitive abilities. It is wise to limit your alcohol intake to less than 2 drinks per day so that your brain communication pathways are not hindered.

7. Relaxing With Meditation

A relax mind possesses a better memory than a stressed mind. Stress is not only bad for your physical health; it also badly affects your brain power by damaging brain cells linked with memory function. One of the popular techniques to manage chronic stress is to indulge in meditation methods. Meditation is all about shutting out your brain and living in the moment. It calms your mind and lets you focus on the present with simple breathing techniques.

The results are enormously positive in terms of memory retention and expansion. Research has proved that performing meditation for 3 months can improve mental capability along with memory function. Other than meditation performing YOGA also contributes in enhancing brain function and intellectual ability. Last but not least, certain aromas like rosemary essentials oil also hold the ability to relax a human mind.

Growing old naturally weakens our brain’s functionality to recall or retain information. Consuming a proper diet and spending time in both physical and mental activities can do wonders for brain health and intellectual capacities.

Like every other body, the part mind needs rest as well in the form of power naps. If you try all the suggested methods once in a blue then they will certainly not help in improving your brain functionality. To boost one’s memory power all the suggested steps should be followed on a regular basis only when the methods will produce positive results undoubtedly.
