Top 10 Easy Ways to Eat Healthy in College

You are here: Home / Others / Top 10 Easy Ways to Eat Healthy in College

January 16, 2020 //  by Amit Kumar

When you are in college, you are basically on your own. You are going to be making a lot of decisions that are essential to your life. You are an adult, free from the protection and shield provided by your parents and everyone in your family.

However, the moment you get into college, you are left all on your own to make important decisions about your life.

One such is your eating habit. Eating healthy is a little more challenging because juggling lessons, tests, projects, and studying could seem exhausting, which means that you barely have time to plan a balanced diet.

For students, while it may seem like their academics is essential, their nutrition is equally important. Why? Because food affects health and without good health, it becomes a challenge to keep up with college work. With that said, the following tips are essential in healthy in college:

Table of Contents

  • 1. When in the College Dining Hall, Go for Healthy Meals.
  • 2. Keep Several Healthy Snacks in Your Room
  • 3. Cook Homemade Meals Together
  • 4. Don’t Purchase Your Groceries When You Are Hungry

  • 6. Put a Limit on Alcohol
  • 7. Put a Limit on the Amount of Sugar You Consume
  • 8. Losing Weight Should Be Done the Right Way
  • 9. Consume Food with Lots of Calcium
  • 10. Take a Healthy Breakfast Before Going to Class
  • Conclusion

1. When in the College Dining Hall, Go for Healthy Meals.

While we all have unhealthy eating alternatives everywhere around us in college, it is advisable to watch out for the food in the college dining hall. Irrespective of how pressed you could be to attend lectures or to purchase the food hurriedly and back to the dormitory, it is always advisable to opt for healthy options.

You should make the right decision and choose healthier meal alternatives with fruits and veggies, in addition to some meat and grains. A lot of colleges being citadels of academic excellence have numerous food options around to enhance positive dieting among students.

2. Keep Several Healthy Snacks in Your Room

While you are studying hard preparing for classes or working on assignments or class projects, you could become hungry. When purchasing meals and groceries, you should not concentrate on what you feel like eating that moment. You should select food substances that are light but satisfying.

Furthermore, it would help if you did not take an excess of heavy metals. In trying to get healthy snacks for those occasional hunger pangs, you can select from productive alternatives such as Oatmeal, granola bars, nuts, and fruits.

Furthermore, for your cravings, you can choose the healthier darker chocolate options rather than the sweetened variants of the same snack.

3. Cook Homemade Meals Together

Homemade meals, they say, are the best meals. They are made from fresh food substances and are eaten raw after cooking, compared to meals that have gone through several rounds of microwaving and over 24 hours old.

Rather than ordering food or getting takeout at the college cafeteria, you could cook along with friends. Numerous healthy meals are meant for college students. Besides, it is a great way to promote healthy eating habits and have fun in the company of friends.

4. Don’t Purchase Your Groceries When You Are Hungry

One of the most common mistakes that we call guilty of is shopping for our grocery and foodstuffs when we are hunger. Why this is undoubtedly something that should be avoided; at that point, the brain only focuses on food that looks appealing and delicious and anything but healthy.

The best thing is to shop for your groceries on schedule. Create a program for grocery shopping. Write your choice of foodstuff down and stick to this plan.

5. Take Lots of Water

Due to a hectic schedule, at times, college students forget to hydrate themselves and not take water. Water is a great part of human health and to ensure that the body functions properly.

A hydrated student can barely concentrate in class, and dehydration prevents the body from flushing out toxins out of the body. Also, a student can encounter future health problems.

6. Put a Limit on Alcohol

Now that you are in college, it is a different game entirely. You are going to be attending lots of parties both within the campus and off the school campus. Expectedly, there would be numerous rounds of alcoholic drinks for everybody.

And since everyone is drinking excessively, typically, you would want to do the same thing. However, if you consume alcohol, you should know that while it has no nutritional importance, it is full of calories.

A simple beer, a single glass of wine, or one ounce of liquor drink contains roughly 100 calories. Furthermore, consuming alcohol is a known causative factor of several health problems.

7. Put a Limit on the Amount of Sugar You Consume

Cut down on your sugar intake whenever you eat. Why it does not contain any nutrient, it is a source of calories. Furthermore, it accelerates the rate of decay of the teeth. Sugar should be used sparingly and should not be added frequently as a sweetening agent. Rather than use sugar as a sweetener, use pure honey.

8. Losing Weight Should Be Done the Right Way

On getting to college, some students typically go off the opposite route, losing weight and becoming slimmer. While it is healthy to lose weight, starving, or using false diets that promise to enhance weight loss can be harmful and typically backfire.

All those theories that state that consuming food in a particular ratio can lead to weight loss are entirely wrong. The safest way to lose weight and shed off those extra pounds is to exercise and take a healthy balanced diet.

9. Consume Food with Lots of Calcium

College students in their early twenties are frequently encouraged to eat lots of food elements that are rich in protein. Proteins ensure that their bodies build up large quantities of calcium to fight off osteoporosis in the future.

If a student would not take milk, they can add generous amounts of low-fat yoghurt, cheese low in fat and leafy, green vegetables in their diet.

10. Take a Healthy Breakfast Before Going to Class

While it is quite tempting to dash off to class in a bid to catch up with early morning classes without having to take anything, it is known that not having breakfast often before going to class impedes academic achievement.

Each time that there is no time for a great breakfast, it is advisable to grab some juice, fruit, and a bagel. While they promote healthy living, these items can be stored easily within the residence water

Conclusion

While academic pursuits should be a priority among college students, healthy eating is equally essential. Because this is the source of nutrients that can significantly affect the health of the student that is needed for excellent academic performance. So eating healthily in college is a part of the quest to excel in college.
