PhD Studentship in Sociology at the University of Manchester, UK

The University of Manchester is inviting applications for a PhD Studentship in Sociology. The Stuart Hall PhD Scholarship will be awarded to one student in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester for a PhD starting in September 2021 and will cover fees and a stipend.

This research scholarship is available to post-graduate researchers in social science (who hold a master’s degree as a minimum) who are planning to come to England to pursue research or further studies at the doctoral or post-doctoral level.

Project Description

The scholarship can be held in any of the 8 Departments within the School of Social Sciences. It is expected that the award-winner will be working in an interdisciplinary area of study focused on one of Stuart Hall’s many areas of interest: cultural studies, race, ethnicity and inequalities.

 Eligibility

Applicants are expected to have a First Class or Upper Second Class Bachelor Honours UK degree and/or a Master’s degree (or overseas equivalent) minimum merit, with a minimum overall average of 65%, including 65% in dissertation and no mark below 55%) in a social science subject. Applicants must hold an offer of study at The University of Manchester before applying for this funding.

Award Information

Tuition fees for 3 years and an annual maintenance stipend (£15, 285 in 2020/1, the exact rate for 2021/22 subject to confirmation from UKRI)

Application Process

  • Applicants must first submit a complete on-line PhD application by the following dates:
  • 1 December 2020 – Politics, Sociology, Social Anthropology, Social Statistics, Law, Criminology
  • 8 January 2021 – Economics
  • 11 January 2021- Philosophy

Applicants are also required to submit a separate funding form to be considered for the award (please see below).
