Applications are invited by the University of Sydney from suitably qualified and outstanding international students for postgraduate research scholarship in Algorithmic Management and the Future of Work.
This award has been established to provide financial assistance to a PhD student to research the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award Project headed by Dr Alex Veen within the University of Sydney Business School. The project will explore topics related to algorithmic management and the future of work, with the focus of the project ideally situated in the platform economy.

Eligibility
- The scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having an unconditional offer of admission to study full-time in a PhD within the University of Sydney Business School at the University of Sydney.
- Applicants must be willing to conduct research into the DECRA scheme project ‘Algorithmic management and the future of work: lessons from the gig economy’.
- Applicants must have Dr Alex Veen on their supervisory team within University of Sydney Business School.
- Applicants must hold an honours degree (first-class or second class upper) or a master’s degree in a related field with a substantial research component.
Selection Criteria
a. The successful applicant will be awarded the scholarship on the basis of:
I. academic merit,
II. Curriculum vitae, and a preliminary research proposal which demonstrates an understanding of, and interest in, the area of research.
b. The successful applicant will be awarded the scholarship by nominating a selection committee consisting of Dr Alex Veen, a delegate from the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies, and the Director of Doctoral Studies in the University of Sydney Business School.
Award Amount
- The scholarship will provide a stipend allowance of $35,000 per annum (fixed rate) for three and a half years, subject to satisfactory academic performance. An extension of six months may be granted upon approval from the Head of Discipline.
- The scholarship will provide academic course fee for 14 research periods for a PhD student, subject to satisfactory academic performance. An extension of two research periods may be granted upon approval from the Head of Discipline.
- The scholarship is for commencement in relevant research period in which it is offered and cannot be deferred or transferred to another area of research.
- No other amount is payable.
- The scholarship is subject to the availability of funding.

Note: Domestic students who receive the scholarship will receive the benefit (a) only, as academic course fees are provided through the RTP Tuition Fee Offset. International students who receive the scholarship will receive both benefits.
