Project Description
Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.
The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

Project description
First and foremost, the studies concern effects of ionic vibrations on, for instance, magnetic ordering, but also other ordered structures, for example, superconductivity, are of interest. The studies will be conducted through both analytical and numerical methods, where the student will be given considerable freedom to define suitable methods.
Research environment
The division of Materials theory at Uppsala University offers a world-class environment for materials theory and quantum matter theory research, with interests spanning from strongly correlated and topological states of matter to atomistic spin simulations, first-principles calculations of an extensive range of functional materials. The division currently consists of approximately 90 researchers, of which about a third are PhD students. The project will be carried out in the research group of Professor Jonas Fransson, currently consisting of one postdoc.
Application Deadline
The deadline for applications is April 01, 2021
Eligibility
Employment
A PhD student’s position is limited to four years of full-time studies, consisting of research and coursework. Other duties at the department, related to teaching and administration, may extend the position to a level of almost 20%. Further information is available at www.physics.uu.se.
The applicant should hold a Master’s degree in physics, or equivalent, with a strong background in condensed matter theory or many-body theory. Good programming skills are advantageous. Fluency in both spoken and written English is an absolute prerequisite.
Application Process
The application should include a personal letter explaining scientific interests and motivation for pursuing a PhD degree, CV, and a verified list of course grades. If available, a Master’s thesis (finished or in draft form) can also be included. Also, two letters of recommendation should be sent directly by the letter writer to jonas.fransson@physics.uu.se with the subject line “Letter of Recommendation, PhD Position 2020”.
