Project Description

The group is interested in developing new methods for the chemical synthesis and modification of peptides and proteins. Peptides and proteins play crucial roles in every aspect of life. Their chemical synthesis allows for incorporating non-canonical amino acids, post-translational modifications, peptide backbone modifications, and functional handles.

However, chemical peptide synthesis requires highly efficient transformations to ensure the successful incorporation of every building block. The Hartrampf group addresses these challenges by using flow-based synthesis methods.

Your responsibilities

The PhD project focuses on the chemical synthesis of small regulatory proteins with potential therapeutic applications. A primary task will be to synthesise novel non-canonical amino acid building blocks for application in flow-based solid-phases peptide synthesis (SPPS). Also, a biochemical assay will be developed to characterise the binding of the synthesised peptides/proteins to their biological targets.

Application Deadline

The deadline for applications is March 20, 2021

Eligibility

The candidate must hold an excellent Master degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field and must be fluent in oral and written English.

A strong background in synthetic organic chemistry, as well as experience with peptide and protein chemistry, protein expression, and/or flow chemistry, is a plus.

What we offer

We offer an exciting position in a stimulating and challenging environment and the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art SPPS technology, flow chemistry equipment, and new instrumentation for peptide purification and analysis.

The candidate will be trained in chemical biology (chemical protein synthesis, synthetic organic chemistry and biological applications) and will benefit from high-profile interdisciplinary collaborations.

Application Process

The employment start date is flexible and will be mutually agreed upon. Your application should contain:

  • Letter of motivation
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Summary of past research accomplishments
  • Transcripts of your academic records from your University and a copy of your degree
  • Contact details of two referees (e.g. by your Master thesis supervisor)

Please submit your application by the latest March 20, 2021 (incomplete applications will not be considered).
