A PhD research fellow position in the field of functional materials for future electronics is available. The PhD candidate will be part of our ATRONICS project, which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC), with the goal to enable the building blocks required for next-generation atomic-scale electronics.

Combing different state-of-the-art microscopy and nano-structuring methods, the PhD candidate will perform experimental research, helping us to establish a new conceptual approach for developing domain-wall-based technology. At the length scale of only a few atoms, our team will use individual domain walls in ferroelectrics to emulate the behaviour of key electronic components such as diodes, transistors and logic gates.

Beyond demonstrating individual devices, we aim to integrate multiple domain-wall devices and develop quasi-2D circuitry and networks with a higher order of complexity then is currently achievable. With this, the PhD candidate will contribute to the development of 2D functional materials for future technologies, which may play an essential role in the transition from nano- to atomic-scale electronics.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017 and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 482 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Materials Science and Engineering within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology.

Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

Eligibility

The PhD-position’s main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in [subject area] or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale.

If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

Background and experience in scanning probe microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, FIB nano-structuring and/or functional oxides are desired. We search for a person that is creative, innovative and can work independently. The person we are searching for has excellent communication skills and enjoys collaborating with other PhD candidates, postdocs, and international researchers (applicants must be able to communicate fluently in English).

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.
