PhD Fellowship in Journalism and Media Studies at the Oslo Metropolitan University

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies offers two 3-year PhD fellowship positions at the Oslo Metropolitan University. The successful applicant will enrol and participate in the doctoral program in library and information science at the Faculty of Social Sciences. An external evaluation committee will rank the applications.

Project Description

The PhD project is to be designed and conducted in a way that contributes significantly to the research group that the successful candidate will join. The position will fall to the applicant with the top-ranked application, given that – after an interview round with the person and the other leading candidates – the candidate is found to be best suited to fill the position. She/he will be a member of one of the five research groups at IJM (see descriptions below).

Research Groups in IJM

Digital Journalism (DJRG) strives towards being a leading environment for research and development activities within the field of digital journalism in Norway, as well as internationally. The group investigates how the profession and the journalistic institutions are changing, and also to gain a more refined understanding of journalism’s role and boundaries in society and thus also of what journalism is and what (digital) journalism studies should be. Media, War and Conflict (MEKK) investigates and analyses journalism in and about war, conflict and peace processes. The research is of direct relevance to the journalism profession and for the study programmes both in journalism, photojournalism and media and communication at all levels from BA to PhD at the department of journalism and media studies. Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Design in Media (MIED) concentrates their research on media start-ups and innovation in a media environment typified by rapid changes in technology, stakeholders, markets and media usage. Media, Environment and Society (MMS) investigates the central questions regarding climate change in the media and society. We will do qualitative content analyses of climate summits and national elections of all countries in the world. The purpose is to keep an overview of how the rhetoric and the politicians handle the climate question. For more information: Media, Environment and Society (MMS)

Media Narration Group (MNG) looks at how narratives develop over time and how they construct and reflect ways of seeing reality, both in journalism and other media productions. We also examine how other developments in society affect media texts (verbal, visual and auditory) and vice versa. An essential part of the group’s work is strengthening discussion between researchers, media practitioners and society in general. For more information: Media Narration Group (MNG)

Eligibility Criteria

Primary duties of the position

The PhD fellow is expected

• To conduct research that contributes significantly to realising the objectives of the group. 
• To contribute to group workshops and consortium meetings and engage in IJM departmental meetings.

You must have

• A master’s degree (120 ETCS) in a relevant field; preferably Media and Communication Studies, Journalism Studies or Information science
• Useful competence in methods (quantitative and/or qualitative)
• Good language skills in English
• Ability to work independently and goal-oriented
• Strong interest in research

Desired background

• Research experience beyond a masters’ degree
• Experience with international research cooperation

Conditions

• The PhD positions require admission to the PhD Program in Library and Information Science
• A final plan for the PhD scholarship shall be approved and made contractual no later than 3 months after commencement of fellowship.

The project proposal will be heavily weighted in the assessment of the applicants. The proposal must indicate that the project will realistically lead to a doctoral degree within the three-year period. The project proposal should be written in English, consist of maximum 10 pages and include the following elements:

• Research questions, theory and method
• Relevant knowledge requirements within the research area
• Schedule for the educational and research plan.

The project proposal must be relevant to one of our research groups. You must specify in your application and at the start of the project proposal for which of the research groups the request is most relevant.

• The certificates/diplomas must include ECTS grades (A–F). Foreign credentials must be translated into English by the degree-conferring institution.
• Education taken abroad should preferably be recognised in advance by NOKUT, and a confirmed copy of the letter of recognition should be enclosed
• Project proposal (max. 10 pages, including a list of references)
• Your master’s degree thesis
• Other relevant scientific works or papers/presentations
• Summary of relevant publications/research experiences
