The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design currently have an opening for a PhD position at the Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology, in the area of smart and advanced materials. Smart cities, buildings and structures is a strategic research area for the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design. Smart structures represent a novel engineering approach that not only improves the safety of structures but also provides valuable opportunities to increase their service life and decrease their environmental impact.
One focus area of the Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology within this field is smart materials. Smart materials can be defined as highly engineered materials that respond intelligently to their environment and be sensible and interactive. On a broader level, one can include advanced engineered materials that are optimized for its purpose. In this context, we will consider smart materials that are employed in the field of structural engineering.
This can involve the study of unconventional materials such as shape memory alloys like self-sensing concrete and smart skins and engineered or functionally graded materials or even 3D printed/additive manufactured materials. The potential of using finite element modelling and material modelling, together with artificial intelligence and machine learning methods, will be investigated. Using the reality gap and data mining algorithms, we can develop a fundamental understanding of the behaviour of smart or advanced materials using real and virtual laboratory tests.
The main supervisor will be Professor Aase Reyes, Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology.
The deadline for applications isFebruary 25 2021
The position will be for a period of three or four years. A four-year period will include 25% compulsory work (teaching, lab, or project supervision responsibilities at the department).
