New Zealand Universities Considering to Bring International Students Back to its Campuses

New Zealand may allow international students to come under quarantine conditions to this country until the borders are reopened to other foreign nationals.

New Zealand universities discuss plans to use charter flights to help international students arrive in the country. Besides this, the Australian Chamber of Commerce has proposed a ‘trans-Tasman bubble’ to allow Australians and New Zealanders to move freely between the two nations.

The vice-chancellor, Grant Guilford of Victoria University of Wellington revealed that institutions were mulling using charter flights to bring students safely to the city. “

The university is working with all relevant health and immigration authorities alongside other educational institutions to identify the quarantine procedure needed to bring students into Wellington safely,” he said.

Plans will ensure that students have access to accommodation during mandatory quarantine periods to handle the Covid-19 risks, as well as being subject to public health requirements. In May, the education minister suggested that international students could arrive, provided they remain in quarantine for two weeks.

The Australian Chamber Tourism chair, John Hart noted that this move would ‘encourage the extension of the air networks over time to other destinations across Australia and New Zealand.

The United Nations Agency for the Promotion of Safe and Ordinary Development of International Civil Aviation (ICAO) adopted guidelines on 1 June to “restart the international air transport system and align its global recovery.”

Auckland University is working with officials to find out how international students can safely enter the country. It sent a draft report on how this should work to Auckland Council, a spokesperson said.

The chief economist of the New Zealand Initiative, Eric Crampton, has previously predicted that about $1.5 billion will be earmarked if borders are opened to students abroad for six months.

A variety of options are under consideration, including preparation for the quarantine arrangements to be placed in place to ensure the safety of students, staff and the public in New Zealand.

English schools across New Zealand also called for border security, with English New Zealand estimating that by September the number of students in their member schools would drop by 85%.

The Government of New Zealand has also allocated NZ$1 million to an international hardship fund for students. Fee-paying international students with real, temporary financial hardship will obtain up to NZ$1,000 for living expenses or services such as food parcels from their educational providers.

New Zealand universities are now highly regarded by international students and their families, thanks to the quality of their education and the safe and welcoming atmosphere.
