“Nebraska Promise”, Giving Free Tuition for Students from Median-Income Families

With a combination of strong academics and affordability, Nebraska University has launched its latest program, The Nebraska Promise. It will provide a tuition-free NU education for undergraduate students in Nebraska with a family income of $60,000 or less.

The university says the program is scheduled to launch in fall 2020. Students whose families have a $60,000 or less adjusted gross income or who qualify for the federal Pell Grant will be able to attend any NU campus and pay no tuition fees. According to university administrators, the plan will also extend to the return, transfer, and new students both on-campus and off.

The plan was announced April 17 at a meeting of the Board of Regents. NU says connectivity and affordability for their students, faculty and staff were the top priorities.

“We’re doubling up on the pledge today,” Carter said. “We understand that a lot of Nebraskans are rethinking every dollar in these uncertain times. We want students and families to know that their university is here for them, that we wish to them as members of our family, and that we are doing what we can to keep the promise of a college education within reach, whatever their circumstances might be.

“The pledge from Nebraska will allow more of our youth to afford college, graduate on time, and get a great-paying career here in our state,” said Governor Pete Ricketts. “I am pleased that the University is taking this important step in keeping costs down for Nebraskans, especially at a time when we are all tightening our belts.”

Candidates will be identified automatically after they admitted to the university and submit the annual Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to Nebraska. In response to the current situation, we have extended the priority deadline for consideration of Nebraska Promise to June 1, 2020. You still have time to file and register for the FAFSA.

Students will be eligible for full tuition coverage by taking a total of 12 credit hours each semester and maintaining a 2.5-grade point average, according to NU. The plan will cover up to 30 credit hours per academic year, but no costs such as books or room and the board will be covered.

The university is advising students to search into the other financial aid programs that each NU campus provides to help alleviate the expenses that the plan does not cover.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is well known as a land-grant university. The university is organized into eight colleges with more than 100 classroom buildings and research facilities on two campuses in Lincoln. It offers more than 150 undergraduate majors, 20 pre-professional programs, and 100 graduate programs.

For admission, you’ve taken the ACT or SAT, request the testing institution to send us your official scores. There is a $45 application fee payable with a credit card or a check. Students should score 20 or higher on the ACT, writing portion not required or, score a total of 1040 or higher on the SAT Critical Reading and Math sections or, rank in the top half of their high school graduating class.
