Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition 2019

Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition is welcoming brilliant minds from the world’s most entrepreneurial universities to face the challenges of the 21st century and reimagining the future.

The competition offers to reintroduce a unique generation of innovators and entrepreneurs into smart, sustainable and resilient communities.

The 10th Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition is hosting by the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE) at Singapore University of Management. The competition is on the theme titled Reimagine Smart, Green and Resilient Cities, with various verticals on green urban innovation.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A team should have at least two persons and up to 5 persons.
  • The main applicant must be polytechnic or full-time university students or university dropouts. 
  • The leading candidate must be a founder of the company (or part of the founding team if the company has not been incorporated)

Category and Composition

Category 0 to 1: Pre-Revenue Teams/Startups with Novel Technology or Business Model Innovations

  • Innovative business models that may or may not be fully approved.
  • The team in initial phases of ideation up to have a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) that has yet to be launched in the market.
  • Each team /startup must have at least a founding member, who is a current student or recent alumni of less than five years.
  • “Current student” is defined as any person who is enrolled in a full-time polytechnic, undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD programme at a tertiary institute.
  • “Recent alumni” is defined as any person who graduated or left school / took a sabbatical after January 1 2015.
  • There is no restriction on the number of members in a team or company.

Category 1: To Revenue-generating early-stage startups, up to Series A

  • The startup is in phases of initial sales or looking to scale. 
  • The product or service has launched in the market and is seeking their next customer(s) and to enter a new market
  • Each team /startup must have at least a founding member, who is a current student or recent alumni of less than five years.
  • “Current student” is defined as any person who is enrolled in a full-time polytechnic, undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD programme at a tertiary institute.
  • “Recent alumni” is defined as any person who graduated or left school / took a sabbatical after January 1 2015.
  • There is no restriction on the number of members in a team or company.

Participants Requirement

  • All participating team must submit the original materials.
  • Each team is eligible to submit its one idea. 
  • the team can make multiple submissions, the last submission made by the group by the deadline will be considered for the evaluation.
  • All the submitted executive summary and pitch deck presentation must only be in English or Chinese.
  • To win any prizes, teams must fully participate in the Global Young Innovators Summit and Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan from March 16, 2020 – March 20, 2020.

The applications will be evaluated online by an international panel of judges.

Executive Summary

  • Not more than 500 words, in pdf
  • The file should be named in this format: Summary_TeamName.pdf

Pitch Deck Presentation

  • Not more than 20 slides, in pdf
  • The file should be named in this format: Presentation_TeamName.pdf

Video presentation (Optional) 

  • This is encouraged but not required.
  • The video should be no longer than five minutes with a preference for mp4 and resolution no greater than 360 pixels.
  • The file should be named in this format: Video_TeamName.mp4

There is a total of up to S$1 million worth of prizes to be won. The Grand Prize will be awarded to the top winner from each of the two categories. Finalists also stand a chance to win other thematic cash, investment and in-kind prizes such as:
