Is Brexit Discouraging International Students to Come to the UK?

You are here: Home / News / Is Brexit Discouraging International Students to Come to the UK?

October 16, 2019 //  by Amit Kumar

Over the world, applicants of business master’s degrees have fallen 3.1 per cent as compared to the academic year in the previous year. In the US only, which is home to the MBA degree, was reported a fall in applications to 56 per cent.

This further adds that British institutions have kicked off a drop in demand for MBAs, which suggests that political disturbances did not affect the potential students.

On the other hand, 59 per cent of business schools in the UK were reported to have a growth in postgraduate degrees with an increase in overseas applicants. Out of every four institutions, three were the applicants from overseas.

The dean of Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business said that business schools in British were identified to be canny options when it came to job opportunities. Not only the job opportunities, but the investment return of study was also smarter in British as compared to other markets. The comparison was made with the US, where the cost is considerably higher.

After seeing the course ranking of the UK, it is second to the US with a rigid job market, Mr Boudling said that talent gathers to places where there is an opportunity.

The US is still a stronger place for jobs where employers are challenged to fill the vacancies, but overall its a universal competition for places. The negative blow of the UK’s vote to abandon the EU is no longer affecting those coming from abroad to study in British colleges and institutes.

Fifty-four per cent of this group said that Brexit had no repercussions on their decision to study in the UK.

The business schools are trying to bring improvement in their international position. One such move was made by the UK prime minister, Boris Johnson, who said that students can now stay for further two years after graduation to seek the job. The schools are now evolving to provide a hostile immigration atmosphere.

The referendum after Brexit weakness in the rate of pound has also attracted overseas students. Not only has this aided the international students, but the school admissions departments are also promoting more courses to attract more students from abroad.

In research conducted by GMAC, it was reported that the European schools are stable or are growing the applications more from overseas this year whereas 60 per cent growth was reported

From the applications abroad.

Despite the efforts, there are a few worrying trends such as the postgraduate students are choosing to study at home. The demand is increasing among the schools in the region of Asia-Pacific. Still, this year, 55 per cent of the applicants were domestic, and only 10 per cent came from overseas. These trends are worrisome as they may dawdle the world to isolationism as in the 18th century.

The force of business is reasonable, but the trends are counterrevolutionary, said by the president of GMAC. He further added that if one does not have an influx of talent, the growth will gradually start to export because of the lack of diverse thinking.
