International Students Now Require Biometrics to Immigrate to Canada

You are here: Home / Others / International Students Now Require Biometrics to Immigrate to Canada

December 10, 2019 //  by Amit Kumar

Canadian Government have passed a new law this week. On December 3, Canada has announced that the international students will be required to give their Biometrics to get their visa issued by their embassy. This change is not limited to the students. Every person who is visiting Canada will have to go through the biometrics scan to their visas issued.

Canada had exemptions on Biometrics for its visitors for a long time. But they have decided to remove the exemption of Biometrics for every person who is about to visit Canada.

The Canadian government agencies have taken this step after considering all the factors related to the student’s and the country’s privacy requirements.

Even the students who want to extend their visas will have to go through the same biometric process. This is a step towards the privacy of the Canadian government. We were expecting it for a long time as we have seen similar concerns before in the assembly. But there were several discussions on this matter.

Finally, this bill was passed last week and is already implemented after December 3 2019. Immigration agencies have promised to keep the whole process as simple as they can. They are ready to help everyone willing to get a Canada visa for study.

Justification of this Change

The Canadian immigration and refugee minister has to say that Photo and Biometrics are the most reliable ways to recognize the people. It has been used by most of the countries. He also added that they are aiming to increase the efficiency and integrity of the whole immigration process with this change.

Who Needs to Give Biometric in Canada After This Bill?

Biometric is required for all the people who are visiting Canada with any purpose. It includes:

Student Visa Permit

Everyone who is thinking about applying for study visa needs to give their biometric after this change in their immigration process. It may increase your charge and paperwork in the process.

Permanent Residence Visa

People who want to get a PR visa of Canada will have to submit their Biometrics to the immigration centre to get their visa approved.

Work permit

It is also applicable to those who are working in Canada on a Work permit visa and does not give any exemption to those. The process is the same for those who are thinking about applying for a work permit visa.

Visitor Visa

The most shocking part of this change is that it is applicable to the temporary visitors also. You will need to give your Biometrics if you are planning to visit Canada for your winter holidays.

There are some exemptions in all these Visa permits issued by the immigration centre.

Reactions on This Law

Many people are opposing this change in their immigration process as it will create more barriers in getting a Canada study visa. They are saying that it is a time-consuming process that will only increase the charge and barriers for students. Also, it has nothing to do with any development.

Another significant effect of this change is that the students who are living in remote areas do not have access to the visa application centres. They will have to visit these centres to get their biometric that will increase their problems.

On the other hand, many people are praising this step. One of the educational advisors has to say that it will help those who have completed their studies and want to enrol themselves in college or universities for further education.
