How to Write an Essay Outline?

An essay is a composition of a well-outlined little piece of words, which expresses the writer’s thoughts or opinions about a particular headline with regards to general research.

Almost all level of education emphasizes the importance of an Essay. Whether in the description of a situation, narration of experience, or exposition on doing something.

Essay Writing is straightforward if one follows the involved procedures. However, it is essential to understand what types of essay we have first shortly;

Narrative

This type of essay relates an experience of what has happened before. For example, an article that narrates WW1 and WW2 or the current state of the COVID 19 pandemic in one’s country to friends abroad.

Argumentative

The writer uses an essay to state his/her position with regards to a particular issue and provides pieces of evidence to back up the laid down proofs.

Persuasive

The persuasive essay looks similar to the Argumentative essay. However, it does not deal with controversies. To convince people to do something is what a persuasive essay does, E.g., Investing in Local businesses will yield millions.

How to Write an Essay

Now, you have a clue of what types of Essays available; this makes it easier when picking a topic for your essay.

There are a few steps involved in writing an essay, and they are;

  1. Pick a Topic
  2. Research
  3. Thesis
  4. Outline
  5. Write
  6. Review

Pick a Topic

The topic is going to be the focus of your essay. It is what you are going to write on and must be flexible enough.

You should not use topics with too much or too little recognition. Pick a pen and list down all the questions you can think of, narrow them down, and select the most suitable.

Also, words used in composing your topic must be equally short and straightforward.

Example 1: Dogs are not Wolves

Research your Topic

After selecting your topic, you need to gather information and related essays using every available medium. Research allows you to gather more ideas when you want to start writing the essay.

Thesis

The thesis is the most critical section of your essay. It gives us a clear overview of what your article is about and captivates the reader’s influence.

Note; the thesis is a single sentence usually placed in your introductory section. Every other point listed in the body of your essay should actively refer back to this.

Example 2: Despite the familiarity claims between these two animals, there are still some facts that show dogs are different from wolves, such as their physical distinction and physiological responses.

The thesis has to be assertive and filled with transitive words. Most importantly, it should be able to display the essence of your essay.

Outline

Writing an essay involves planning. Planning includes outlining and arranging your points. Too much or too little points can affect your essay negatively. Thus an outline is needed.

An outline is a rough sketch of how your essay should be. It explains where you need to start and where to stop. The importance is similar to an architectural map of a building.

Write

Writing involves compiling all your points together by following the previously made outline. There are three categories of any essay;

Introduction

Previously, we stated the existence of the thesis as a captivating short piece of every essay. In the introduction of any essay, your thesis takes the leading position.

The introduction should give a general insight into the essay. In particular, the introductory section states your stand as the writer.

Note; if your introduction is vague or congested with too many points, it will lose its meaning. That is why the thesis should is used to avoid such a circumstance.

Body of the essay

This section deals with points supporting your thesis in the introductory section. Everything here goes back to the first section and must not contradict each other.

The body of an essay gives the reason(s) why something should be the way it is, E.g., Argumentative essay or provides a description of a named object/person, e.g., Descriptive essay.

Two things are essential when composing the body of your essay. These include Paragraphs and Focus sentences.

Paragraphs are new statement lines with indentation. For each point, create a new ‘paragraph.’

It is essential because they help prevent issues of overly congested points on a single line. Also, it makes your essay readable.

A Focus sentence is a short piece of words that provides an introduction to elaborating your new point on each paragraph. Whatever you write in the section should support the focus sentence.

It is vital because it helps you keep to the trail of what your essay is about.

Example 3: Wolves have stronger jaws than dogs. Although these two animals have the same number of teeth, their jaw strength is quite different, given that dogs are mainly scavengers while the other widely feed on bones.

Example 4: Wolves have bulkier foot than dogs. Speed is essential in the survival game and is an advantage gained by wolves through the morphological development of their feet.

Conclusion

The conclusion is the summary of your essay. It should include the paraphrases of your initial thesis, paraphrases of the main points from all available paragraphs, and a closing line.

Note that this section is critical and should properly reinstate the ground of your essay.

Review

After the conclusion of your essay, you must check it over again. This review is to look out for grammatical errors, unintentional plagiarism, punctuation mistakes, and other anomalies.

With all these steps, writing an essay would longer be as difficult as it used to be.
