How to Write an Essay about Family?

You are here: Home / Essay / How to Write an Essay about Family?

May 15, 2020 //  by Amit Kumar

School is full of fun activities, games, and a bunch of learning opportunities. Essay writing is one such learning method which allows students to express their feeling and pique their interest in literature.

Back then, it seemed simple, but one had to put in a lot more effort to get an ‘A’ on that paper. Over the years, things have changed. The methods of writing have evolved, but and similarly, the bar of excellence has also risen. And this is why students continue to face a problem.

You cannot afford to get a lousy grade, can you? It can be tough to write an enchanting essay. So here are some simple ways in which you can improve your essay writing skills.

These tips will help you write an essay about your family.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Make a Chart
  • 2. What Should You Talk About?
  • 3. Cover the Basics
  • 4. Talk about Something Familiar
  • 5. Take a Structured Approach
  • 6. Monotonicity
  • 7. Proper Approach
  • 8. Seek Help

1. Make a Chart

The very first thing you should do is making a chart. The purpose of doing building a table is to bring together all your ideas. Your mind is an idea factory. It can help you out with anything, but you should stop and think for a while.

Before you start writing, make sure to think about it first. Make a list of things that you consider would be a good fit for your essay. Once you have done that, add subtopics to the main topics. If you continue doing this, you will have a very detailed chart and almost half your essay.

2. What Should You Talk About?

Students usually have this concern as to what they should talk about in their essays. There are so many topics to cover in a single article. But it would help if you were smart enough to pick something simple and relatable. It also depends on the word count of your essay.

If you are required to submit a short article, pick up 2-3 incidents or things, and talk about them. But if you need to write a moderate or an extended essay, using 2-3 base points will not work. You need to cover 5-10 aspects, depending on the length, in your article.

3. Cover the Basics

We talked about how many points to include in your essay. But what exactly should you write about? Some students try to take a different approach, which works out great sometimes. But there are high chances that they would miss out on some important content. And this takes a toll on your grade.

Therefore, the first step is to cover the basics. You can start simple, with an introduction to your family. Talk about your parents and siblings. But what most students forget about is- talking about them!

The essay is about your family, and you are a part of it. Please do not assume that your teacher knows about you, so it does not make sense to write about yourself. It makes perfect sense! And this gives you an edge over your classmates.

4. Talk about Something Familiar

You might realize that when you read your fellow student’s essay, they talk about all the great things that happened. Maybe a family trip to someplace nice, or a big gathering, perhaps a wedding in their family. These moments are essential and deserve mention.

But that does not mean you cannot talk about simple things. It is the simple things that have the magic. It would be best if you spoke about regular days. How does your day start? What defines an ideal weekend for you? Talk about your parent’s jobs.

Here it would help if you talked about your family bonding activities. Like cooking together, making school projects, cleaning the backyard, movie night at home. These things might not seem significant, but they express the true meaning of a family.

Simple things= a better life!

5. Take a Structured Approach

While writing an essay, it is only plausible that one gets carried away with one point or story. And that reflects poorly in your essay. However, a structured approach will prevent that from happening. Remember, we talked about creating a chart?

Refer to that chart while writing your essay. It will tell you which point should come after what. It will help you maintain the flow and tone of your essay. You can also determine which part needs how much attention. That way, all points get equal consideration, and your article gets a refined appearance.

6. Monotonicity

Essays are supposed to be expressive and straightforward. But that does not mean there is any room for monotonicity. It is tough to maintain a constant flow and not fall into the pit of monotone.

But if you wish to escape monotony, you should consider adopting better sentence structures. It is not easy in the beginning. The simplest thing to do here is to avoid starting your sentences with the same syllable. Most students tend to begin their sentences with ‘I.’

There is nothing wrong with it, but if you use it in every other sentence, it starts getting boring.

Try some different approaches. It might increase the concentration of passive statements on your essay, but nobody would be dozing off in the middle of it.

7. Proper Approach

It is not just you! Everyone faces difficulty while writing an essay on family. The primary reason behind it is that everyone is either too busy or too tired at all times. If you want your essay to be the best, do some solid research. As questions to your family member, but write your observations.

8. Seek Help

It is not easy to complete an essay. And therefore, it only makes sense if you get some help. You can approach your parents, your elder siblings, or your tutor. You can even ask your babysitter for some insight. Don’t be shy, ask! And you will get what you are looking for.

Writing a simple essay about your family should not be that tough. You love them, and they love you, but putting down those emotions on paper is a whole new task. And this is the reason why, once in a while, you need some help. And these are a few points which will get you through!
