How To Write An Analytical Essay?

For writing an analytical essay, you need first to understand the meaning of the topic. Interpret the meaning of the topic by analyzing it without bias. Analyze the subject by coming up with an argument and defend your views with proper evidence. To present your analysis, you have to craft a thesis statement.

Getting Started

The main aspect of writing an analytical essay is to select an argument that you will support throughout the paper. Your arguments should focus on a thesis that you will mention in your thesis statement.

For example, if your topic is the American Civil War, you would want to analyze the factors that led to the Civil War.

 The primary thing is to think about your thesis statement in a way that it could summarize your analysis in one sentence. Once you have chosen your thesis based on your analysis, organize your thoughts to explain it in the body paragraphs.

Define the purpose of your study. Keep in mind, and it is not possible to address every single element in an essay. You may have to present your analysis in the limited number of words.

You need to describe the main points of your analysis in the body paragraphs of the essay. Substantiate your ideas with evidence and relevant examples. Before presenting your analysis, it’s better that you conduct a thorough study on the topic.

Identify the main points of the subject, and analyze them separately to check how you can explain them. State all the relevant information concisely and coherently. Make sure you develop a clear understanding of the topic. Clarity is necessary to present a comprehensive analysis.

Making an outline

When you create an outline for an analytical essay, make sure you follow a proper format. Generally, a standard article comprises three components, i.e. Introduction, Body paragraphs, and conclusion.

The number of body paragraphs depends upon the word count of the essay. You need to use researched information to express your analysis. Usually, you need to express one thought in one paragraph. Structure your paper so that you could present your views and engage readers.

Deciding a Title

Sometimes, the tile of the essay is already given. However, in a few cases, it is up to the readers to choose a title from a scenario or a subject. If you select a title, make sure you engage the reader. The content of the paper should adequately address the topic.

The title that poses a question may be persuasive for readers. By reading the title, a reader, my develop a curiosity to know the answer to the question.

If you present a question in the title, you need to state your position in the thesis statement. Explain your answer in the subsequent paragraphs.

Writing the Introductory Part 

You should understand how to draft an introduction to an analytical paper. The introduction of your paper serves as an outline. Provide a general description of the topic in a few lines to give an overview as to what is the topic. State your thesis statement in the introductory paragraph.

Remember, the thesis statement should not represent a piece of general information, instead, you have to take a definite position in your thesis. To make your statement prominent, italicize that sentence.

By looking at the italicized sentence, a reader would understand that it is your main point. Subsequently, you will discuss the points to prove your thesis. 

You aim to engage the reader right from the beginning. Remember, a strong introduction lays the foundation of an effective essay, which could adequately analyze the subject.

Writing the Body Paragraphs

In body paragraphs, you need to demonstrate your analytical skills. You should present well-researched and accurate details in the paragraph to support your thesis. Explain one idea per paragraph; an argument may relate to different issues. Maintain a balance in your writing, and make sure your tone is not biased when presenting an analysis.

 Employ reason while making any judgement about the issue, which is under discussion. You must state the opposing views to present a clear picture to the readers.

By doing so, you will craft a balanced viewpoint. When you analyze the opposite view in your paper, make sure you refute it through concrete evident or relevant example. You have to be logical when you construct your body paragraphs.

In a body paragraph, write the main sentence. The main sentence or the first sentence of your body paragraph is your topic sentence. It reflects the main thought that you are going to present in the paragraph.

You will relate your ideas to your thesis statement. Provide the perspective of your topic sentence, whether it is a quote, a particular event or an example. You need to provide evidence on when, how, why, what and who.

Include your analysis to show how it connects with your thesis. The last sentence of each body paragraph should sum up the main idea of the paragraph, and provide a transition to the subsequent paragraph. When you have comprehensively crafted the body paragraphs of your analytical essay, it is the time to conclude your essay.

Writing the Conclusion (Last part of your analytical essay)

The conclusion of your essay is brief and concise. In other words, it is the recap of everything that you have included in your article. Reiterate your thesis statement and sum up your argument.

Take your argument one level above. You need to demonstrate as to how your argument is significant in broader terms. The conclusion is an integral part of your essay.

In the concluding part, you do not present a new argument. Instead, you endorse your previously stated position.

How to Write an Analytical Essay- Final Word

To write an analytical essay, first, you need to understand the subject. Take a position about the topic and conduct thorough research. Include a thesis statement in a way that it summarizes your analysis in one sentence.
