How To Write a Persuasive Essay On Monarchy

You are here: Home / Essay / How To Write a Persuasive Essay On Monarchy

May 6, 2021 //  by Free Educator

Writing an essay on monarchy gives a student the opportunity to express their views on monarchy from different perspectives. It enables them to explain why the monarchy should remain or be abolished. Many students agree with the abolition of the monarchy, but others, in particular the older generations, consider it to be part of the nation and an institution which is valuable. A student looking to write a persuasive essay on the monarchy should take in the opposing viewpoints to find an argument which will resonate with the reader.

Among the many arguments which are in favour of abolishing the monarchy, there are also many in favour of keeping it. When deciding on an argument in favour of the monarchy, it is worth researching the history of the monarchy and the opinions of the people which have opposed the monarchy.

The monarchy: success

The queen’s reputation as a successful monarch has been maintained throughout her life. Queen Victoria only reigned for 63 years, but she reigned at the height of the industrial revolution. She built a great network of relationships with other countries, for example her relationship with the USA. The USA was in desperate need of new allies during the World wars, so Queen Victoria established close ties with the USA and this culminated in the USA becoming the only one of the British colonies to be a republic. Her monarchy has been successful in that it has protected the British identity of the nation while maintaining its sense of unity.

Public opinion: support

The monarchy in England has been controversial at various times in the past. Before the 19th century, there was no succession and monarchies were inherited through blood. This meant that monarchs could rule for many decades, providing stability for the country. The growing industrial revolution created an increase in the demand for new political leaders. The public’s views on monarchy changed at the end of the 19th century when it became clear that the new leaders had the capability to bring more change and progress to the country. Therefore, the public began to see the monarchy as a symbol of unity, instead of one which needed the presence of a monarch.

How to write a persuasive essay on monarchy

While writing an essay on monarchy does not need to be difficult, students should note that it is an important part of their essay writing for one reason. The students are hoping that the readers of their essay will take in their arguments and find them convincing. In order for the student to show they have done this, they will need to include evidence and argument. The most important evidence they should include is the opinions of people who oppose the monarchy, as well as the opinions of people who support it. In addition, they need to show the readers that their position is supported by objective facts.

One thing to bear in mind with a persuasive essay is that it is difficult to distinguish between opinion and fact. To prove that the monarchy has failed and should be abolished, a student could give arguments in favour of abolishing the monarchy and also arguments in favour of keeping the monarchy.

For this reason, it is advisable for students to choose one of the arguments for abolishing the monarchy, but one of the arguments in favour of keeping it. They can use this to substantiate the arguments that they want to use to prove their position.
